Can I walk from Kleine Scheidegg to Alpiglen without the Eiger Trail?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Positano, is looking for an easier walking path from Kleine Scheidegg to Alpiglen without taking the steep Eiger Trail. They want to find the lower trail they used years ago, as they plan to return in a couple of weeks and prefer an easy walk this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the lower trail starting from the rear of the Kleine Scheidegg train station, which parallels the railway line and is signposted towards Alpiglen station.
  • The walk is mostly downhill and can be completed in about 1 hour, making it easier than the Eiger Trail.
  • Consider other scenic but easy hikes like First to Bachalpsee or First to Grosse Scheidegg while you’re in the area.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can conveniently use the trains down to Grindelwald from Alpiglen.

    Hi Positano
the Eiger trail traditionally runs between Eigergletcher and Alpiglen and is very scenic but somewhat steep and narrow as you surmised. Yes there is a trail down Grindelwald valley connecting KS to Alpiglen which is lower and more direct than going up to Eigergletcher and hiking the Eiger trail. I have never done the lower trail as I have always taken the more scenic Eiger trail, so I can’t comment on what the lower trail is like. I would imagine it is less steep and wider and roughly parallels a ski run used in winter.

Thank you so much for your reply Mark. Many years ago I know I walked what you call the lower trail but a few years ago, when I was very much older, I somehow found myself on the Eiger Trail and it was too much for me. I’m going back in a couple of weeks and I hope I can find the lower Trail again.

You are not likely to miss the lower trail. To reach the Eiger trail you would have to take train from KS to Eigergletcher or walk strait up towards Monch/Eiger to reach Eigergletcher. The trail you want will be down hill from KS and veer to the right. Almost assuredly there will be signs directing  you to Alpiglen.

    Hi Positano,

You can certainly walk from Kleine Scheidegg to Alpiglen without going via Eigergletscher. The trail starts from the rear of the Kleine Scheidegg train station where trains for Grindelwald depart. The trail parallels the railway line as you descend to the valley, then drifts away after the first or second junction. Just follow the direction to Alpiglen station (possibly 1 hour walk). If you continue on the trail, it will take you to Grindelwald Grund (the trail is signposted as trail No. 34).

    Regards,
    Anna

Thank you Anna.  Would you say the trail you describe is “easy”?  I am not in the best of health and I want to only do easy walks this time around.

    Hi Positano,

The trail is mostly downhill, not necessarily good for the knees, but comparing this to the Eiger Trail, I think it is fairly easy and you can complete it in 1 hour or so. From Alpiglen you can simply take the train down to Grindelwald. There’s also a nice restaurant at Alpiglen for refreshments.

    Regards,
    Anna

If you want some more hiking that is relatively easy (not too long or steep)and very scenic, I would suggest looking at First to Grosse Scheidegg or First to Bachalpsee.  Grutschalp to Murren also nice. And last Schynige Platte has a very scenic Panaramag trail you could do all or just part.

Oh wow Mark…this is so nice of you!  Yes I am planning to do First to Bachalpsee but now I will slso look into Grosse Scheidegg.  I don’t think I have time to go over to Murren but I sure have happy memories of some of those walks there in the past.  Thank you Mark!
