Time needed at Giessbach Falls including funicular and circular walk?

Short summary – read this first

Nancy is trying to fit a boat trip on Lake Brienz from Interlaken to Geissbach Falls into her travel plans. She needs advice on how much time to allow for getting off the boat at Geissbach, taking the funicular up, walking the circular trail to the falls, and returning to catch a boat back.

Key takeaways:
  • Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the round trip from the boat landing, including the funicular ride and trail walk.
  • If short on time, consider taking the train to Brienz and then the boat to Geissbach to optimize your schedule.
  • Validate boat schedules before you depart to ensure they align with your planned timings.

I’m trying very hard to fit in a boat trip on Lake Brienz from Interlaken to Geissbach Falls, but finding it’s a bit difficult due to travel times and less frequent boat schedules than I’d thought there would be. Can anyone advise how much time I should alllow if I want to get off the boat at Geissbach, take the funicular up to Hotel Geissbach, walk the circular trail to see the falls, and then get back down on the funicular to be ready to catch a boat back. How much time is needed at Geissbach to do that? Thank you for any advice you can share!

I’d allow 1.5 to 2 hours round trip from the boat landing using the funicular up and down.  If you’re really tight on time, perhaps taking the train to Brienz to hop on the boat from there over to Giessbach (the boat ride is about 10 minutes) and then take the boat back to Interlaken if the boat schedule works for your time frame.  Check the boat schedules carefully to make sure the direction of the boat and schedules will work for your time constraints.

    Hi Nancy NYC,

In addition to Lastlook’s helpful reply, another option is to take the bus back to Brienz rail station from the Grand Hotel Giessbach.  The bus is not that frequent so do research the timings using the Swiss timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/)

    Kind regards,
