Lake Thun boat ride on the way to Montreux to Gare Routiere Geneve

Short summary – read this first

A traveler shared that they purchased the Half Price Pass + BOP and planned to take a Lake Thun boat ride on their last day while traveling from Mürren to Gare Routière Genève. They needed advice on whether to reserve boat tickets and how to plan their route, particularly regarding train connections after the boat trip.

Key takeaways:
  • No reservation is needed for the Lake Thun boat ride, so you can just hop on.
  • For optimal travel, take the first boat from Interlaken West at 11:10 AM to Thun, then train to Spiez and continue to Montreux.
  • You can utilize your 4-day BOP all the way to Montreux, but for the journey from Montreux to Geneva, you will need point-to-point tickets.

Thank you for your helpful resources! We got the Half Price Pass+ BOP.
On our last day leaving Murren, we would like to take the Lake Thun boat/cruise ride on our way to Gare Routiere Geneve.

    1) With HPP+BOP, the boat rides are included.  Do we need to reserve tickets or just hop on?
    2) Trying to plan route: Interlaken West, to Thun and then backtrack to Spiez? Is there another town beyond Spiez to continue train toward Montreux?  Would like to maximize the boat trip since it is the only activity planned for the day and can arrive late in Gare Routiere Geneve.

    Appreciate all your help

    Hi murren2025,

There is no need to reserve your seats on the boat.

For the boat cruise on Lake Thun (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/boat-lake-thun/), I recommend taking the first boat from Interlaken West at 11:10 AM, arriving in Thun at 13:20 PM. From Thun you can take a train to Spiez, then Spiez to Zweisimmen and Zweisimmen to Montreux on the Golden Pass Panorama train (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/). Alternatively, if you would like to reach Montreux early, take the fast train via Brig (please note your Berner Oberland Pass is valid up to Spiez only if you take this connection). Please use the SBB timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/) check train schedules.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello again Murren2025

I would in principle strongly support Anna’s suggestion of getting the boat to Thun, and then train to Zweisimmen, then train to Montreux.

Catch the 14 01 RE1 train from Thun to Zweisimmen via Spiez.  The carriages for Zweisimmen will be at the BACK of the train as it pulls in to Thun.  At Zweisimmen go straight across the platform on to the 15 02 train to Montreux, arrive there 17 23.  Under the subway at Montreux to platform 1 and catch the IR95 train to Geneva, getting off at the station in the city centre at 1835.  I gather that the Gare Routiere in Geneva is about ten minutes walk from the train station.

You say that you ‘can arrive late in Gare Routiere Geneve’, but you do not say when your coach is due to depart.  I would not use the itinerary I have just outlined if that departure is before 20 00.

Remember what I said in your previous thread.  By taking the slow Zweisimmen route you can use your 4-day BOP all the way to Montreux.  But for Montreux to Geneva you need point-to-point tickets (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/point-to-point/).  Your HFCs give 50% discount.

    Best wishes

    Roger

You may have your luggage with you but I would highly recommend spending at least an hour in Thun and walking down to see the covered bridges. It was a beautiful area. We did a day trip from Interlaken and had lunch in Thun and very much enjoyed that town.
