Lakeside summer trip with children in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Dave is planning a family holiday in Switzerland this summer as a farewell trip for his daughter going to university. They want to enjoy swimming in a warm lake and do some mild hiking, but need help deciding on towns or resorts. They are flying into Geneva and will be traveling by train the next day, so they are looking for lakeside accommodation with mountain views within a limited budget.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider lakeside areas like Montreux and Lucerne for swimming and hiking options.
  • Look for apartments in multi-family chalets since lakeside rentals are rare.
  • The Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Luzern) is great for both swimming and sightseeing.
  • All major Swiss lakes have clean water and designated swimming spots, so you can choose based on scenery too.
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for easy train and bus travel around the country.

    Hello there,

My daughter is off to uni this summer and we’ve given her the choice of family holiday. She has chosen Switzerland!

Our remit is that we want to be able to swim (in a lake – warmish, hopefully) and do some mild hiking (with other younger daughter), while enjoying the mountain views etc.

I’ve already booked flights – Geneva – and will need to take train after one night there. But we have absolutely no idea where to even start in terms of resorts.

    PLEASE HELP! We’ll be massively grateful… 🙂

I think I just need to narrow down the options for towns/resorts so we can hopefully then find a lakeside chalet with mountain views. Too much to ask? Budgets not unlimited, though!

    All the best,

    Dave

Hello Davidsandu and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Congratulations to your daughter for choosing Switzerland as a holiday destination, she’s a great kid, I can tell! 🙂

All of the lakes in Switzerland are clean and open to swimming. Look into the following links of Swiss lake-side areas:

http://www.myswissalps.com/la kegeneva (my tip, look at Montreux)
    http://www.myswissalps.com/la kelucerne
beautiful surrounding for hiking, check “what to do” and Lucerne’s a lovely city

Once you find a place that inspires you I suggest you go into looking for accommodation in the “Hotels” or “Rentals” tabs of the links, to find the perfect place to stay.

    Best and happy planning,

There are very few lakeside rental chalets, but there are a few appartments within multi-family chalets.

Try Novasol or Interhome (the latter is a Swiss company with international presence)

I often swim in the Swiss alpine lakes in summer, there are official beaches, but you can also access the lake at many unofficial spots just by walking down from the adjacent road.

The Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Luzern) is ideal for a mix of tourist sites and swimming, but all the main Swiss lakes can be used for swimming
