Route Lake Como to Interlaken and best rail pass

Short summary – read this first

Atifmir is planning a family trip to Switzerland in June, traveling from Lake Como to Interlaken with his wife and two kids. He seeks advice on the best rail route to take with a Swiss Travel Pass and whether a 3-day pass suits their itinerary, which includes mountain visits and a cruise on Lake Thun.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the advanced timetable link to find the best train connection from Lake Como to Interlaken.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel from the Swiss border, so ensure to buy a ticket from the border to Interlaken.
  • Consider the scenic Centovalli line for a beautiful journey.
  • Avoid renting a car for this trip; public transport is more convenient and cost-effective.
  • Plan your itinerary carefully to make the most of your Swiss Travel Pass.

    Dear Fellow members,

I am new to the forums. I am planning a trip to Switzerland in June with my wife and 2 kids. We are going to be in Lako Como (Ballagio and Varenna) and intend to travel from there to Interlaken. I intend on buying the Swiss Travel Pass. Can you please advise which rail route would be the best considering I’ll be having the swiss travel pass, from lake como to interlaken?

Also, I would really appreciate any feedback regarding our decision to get a 3 days swiss travel pass. We intend on visiting some mountain tops, cruise around the lake thun and some short trips to nearby villages.

    Thanks.

    Hi Atifmir,

You could travel via the scenic Centovalli line: http://www.myswissalps.com/ce ntovalli. For train schedules, enter Locarno and Domodossola in the via boxes of the timetable that Steph mentioned.

Thank you so much Steph and Arno for your replies. Much appreciated. My son will be 4 years old and the little one will be 8 months old at the time of travel.

I can’t figure out the best way to travel from ballagio/varenna to interlaken! The shortest one seems to be Varenna-Milan-Spiez-Interlaken. Is it a good idea to get a rental car from Lugano and drive to Interlaken?

    Hi Atifmir,

We’re about Switzerland here so I can’t provide many details about Italy. I’m quite sure there’s a good bus connection from Bellagio to Como though (line C30). Como is on the Swiss border. From Como, you can take many trains via various routes, either the quickest or a scenic one. I wouldn’t rent a car for this: you won’t need a car in the Interlaken region, and dropping a car in a different country is often (always?) very expensive. If you have a car in Italy you could use it to get to Como and drop it there possibly.

You’re welcome! An alternative to research might be the ferry to Menaggio, then the bus to Lugano in Switzerland from there. It is shorter and perhaps quicker, but I don’t have much details on this either. Perhaps this is useful:

    Dear Arno,

Yes, I am also shaping up the plan in the same way. I have checked the train from Lugano to Interlaken. I’ll try to add the screenshot of the routes here. Would really appreciate if you could give your feedback about how scenic this route it? Or perhaps there are other better options..

    Hi Atifmir,

That route includes the longest train tunnel in the world, so not that scenic, but it is quick. The route I suggested earlier is more scenic, or this route: http://www.myswissalps.com/go tthardpanoramaexpress. All details on how to plan these routes are on those pages, particularly on the Route tabs. Definitely worth it if you don’t mind a longer trip.
