Greeting and thanks for all the information you provide about traveling to Switzerland.

We traveling there starting 15 June and staying about 2 weeks.  The primary purpose of the trip is landscape photography – especially photographing the Eiger and Matterhorn.  We will purchase the Swill Half Fare Card prior to arriving in Zurich.  Our plan:

    • Arrive in Zurich – drive to Grindelwald via the Furkapass (which is supposed to open today)
    • Grindelwald 4 full days
    • Tasch (Zermatt) 3 full days – includes Eggishorn Glacier
    • Tasch to Gruyere via Château de Chillon – 2 full days in Gruyere
    • Lucerne 3 full days
    • Lucern to Zurich for the ride home
    • A couple of specific questions:
    1. We are staying very close to the Grindelwald Train station – so access to the area transportation network is very convenient.
    2. From Grindelwald we will cover the Eiger and the entire range via gondolas and cog railways to Grindelwald-First, Kleine Scheidegg , Jungfraujoch and Mannlichen. A day in Lauterbrunnen is planned as well. Since we will have the Half Fare Card, is there a benefit purchase the Jungfrau Travel Pass as well?
    3. When is it prudent to purchase tickets for Jungfraujoch? For me the biggest variable is weather.
    4. Access to Matterhorn is easy to plan – the Gornergrat railway, the only challenge is sunrise pictures of Matterhorn since we are staying in Tasch.

Again, thanks for all you do to make planning a trip Switerzerland less stressful.
    Bill

    Hi Bill,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you are travelling with a car, we usually recommend just getting a Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/) so you can save on mountain excursions. If you are planning to explore the Jungfrau region for more than 2 days, getting a Jungfrau Travel Pass might be more cost effective. But I suggest your do the math first using our spreadsheet here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/compare/

I recommend purchasing your tickets to Jungfraujoch a day in advance or on the day itself after checking the weather forecast. You can find details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/
If you are interested in capturing the sunrise from Gornergrat (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/), you may be interested in the Sunrise Trips to Riffelsee available every summer between July and September. Departure is very early between 4.30 – 6AM, depending on dates.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna
