We are planning a trip from Sep 23 for 10 days. Not able to decide on which village to stay in. We’ve covered Wengen, Murren, Grindalwald area, Montreaux, Vevey, Gstaad, Sannen, Broc area as well including the key towns. Any suggestions please..somewhere close to main train lines but without being too touristy. Also we’ve booked a place for early September in Oberterzen. Any feedback regards that area…it looked very scenic. Thanks!

    Hi Sonya,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Just so we are clear, how long have you booked your stay in Oberterzen?  Afterwards or before, would your plan be to  then travel to other villages within the area or another region?  If another region, which region(s) would you be interested in, or perhaps share some interests so we can narrow down some options.

Oberterzen is very nice, you are close to lake Walensee which I find is stunning. Water sports can be enjoyed on lake Walensee or you can also simply enjoy soaking in the views too. To reach Oberterzen itself, you’ll need to take a gondola from Unterterzen. Continuing further with the gondola, you’ll reach Flumserberg at the top where you can enjoy hiking, biking and other activities.

Use the Swiss timetable so you can research the journey(s): https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thank you for your revert and tips for Iberterzen.  We are in Switzerland all of September. First half on east side in Oberterzen and then for remaining 15 days we were thinking of some village on the west side that we’ll use as base that will help us explore nearby villages and lakes. We can’t do serious hikes and excursions and are looking suggestions for scenic villages with connections to explore beyond. Thank you !

    Hi Sonya,

I agree with Yolanda. Oberterzen is a lovely village near the beautiful Walensee. You’re also very close to Flumserberg which is a popular ski resort in winter and a hiking paradise in summer. From Oberterzen, you could easily explore the numerous small towns and villages around Lake Walen such as Walenstadt, Weesen and Amden. Further, there’s the Glarus region nearby with Elm and Klöntarlersee as possible excursions.

Have you decided where your next base is after Oberterzen? If you can share which region you’d like to visit and explore, I’d be happy to suggest a few towns or villages to stay. You can also check out guide about Swiss regions here: https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/places/

    Hi Anna,

We went ahead with Adelboden as our choice for second half of September and have booked an Airbnb. We plan to use a car for driving around throughout the month…do you foresee a challenge with that ?  We are from the USA and used to driving on right side of the road. Would also welcome some suggestions on nearby areas to see in Adelboden. Thanks !

    Hi Sonya,

September is generally a great time to be visiting Switzerland. It can still be quite warm and pleasant and the summer crowds have petered off.

Driving, you will be fine.  We also drive on the right-hand side too.  If you have not come across our driving guide, here’s the link to it.  Lots of useful tips and local information:

A few suggestions whilst in Adelboden. Leuk, a small medieval village and Leukerbad (thermal spa resort) are around a 1.5 to 2 hour drive away.  Fiesch and Ernen are worth taking a look too.

You can find more info about the Valais region here: https://www.myswissalps.com/region/valais/

Further east, you’d reach the Engadine area: https://www.myswissalps.com/region/engadine/

I hope this gives you a few ideas.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
