Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Schilthorn in one Day?

Short summary – read this first

Arunava and two friends are planning a day trip in mid July from Frutigen to Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Mürren, and Schilthorn. They want to know if their itinerary is doable in one day and how to order their visits. They are also confused about the cable car prices with the Swiss Travel Pass and seek clarity on ticket costs.

Key takeaways:
  • Plan to visit Schilthorn early in the day for better visibility.
  • Use the Swiss timetable to gauge travel times for your itinerary.
  • The return fare for the Mürren-Schilthorn trip with the Swiss Travel Pass is CHF 42.80, not double the one-way fare.
  • Check the Jungfrau region guide for more information about your destinations.

Hi Arunava—I think you can manage your agenda in one day, although it may feel rushed. I think you should plan to do Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/ ) as early in the day as possible as visibility sometimes decreases as the day goes on (that’s what we experienced).

Thank you, EASW! So Lauterbrunnen – Grütschalp – Mürren – Schilthorn first, then on the way back .. Thrill Walk (Birg), Allmendhubel to Mürren, back to Lauterbrunnen and Staubbach Falls (basically in reverse order). Do you happen to have any idea about the ticket prices because two different sources seem to say two different things.

    Hi Arunava,

The prices are the same on the SBB app and Schilthorn website, i.e. CHF 42.80 return Mürren-Schilthorn with the Swiss Travel Pass, which is half fare.

What you seem to have done when using the SBB app is to assume that the return fare is double the single fare, but it is actually less than that.

In the SBB app, a single fare at half price is CHF 25.90, but if you tap the double arrows, indicating a return journey, the fare is CHF 42.80, the same as on the Schilthorn site.

    Hope this clarifies things!

    Hi Arunava,

Trust the helpful replies from EASW and Alpenrose have clarified. I would suggest you also use the Swiss timetable to research and gauge travel times too.  That way you can also see what is doable for you and your fellow travellers.  Information on your destinations can also be found in our Jungfrau region guide. See the attached links:

The Swiss Travel Pass is a popular choice, should you need any online purchase options, you can find some listed in our Swiss Travel Pass guide below:

    Have a great trip.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
