Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald First: best route via train+cable car?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland starting on April 6, 2024, focusing on Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, and Grindelwald. They want to know if their plan to take a train and enjoy the scenic rides is feasible and what the best way to do it is. They've visited the area before and are eager for new experiences this time around.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider doing the Royal Ride from Wengen to Mannlichen for stunning views; it's an additional 5 CHF per person.
  • Verify your travel plans carefully, as the cable cars will close for maintenance after April 7, so you may need an alternative route after that date.
  • Make sure to check the timetable for the last gondola down from Grindelwald First to avoid being stranded.

    Absolutely doable!

We did it last year, and I strongly recommend the Royal Ride from Wengen to Mannlichen (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/mannlichen/). It is open space on top of the cable car. It was additional 5 CHF per person. Absolutely gorgeous, but it was in July. Hope the weather is good for that in April.

    Hi Earl,

The route you have planned will be possible on 7 April 2024 (and perhaps 6 April if you arrive early enough).

After 7 April, the Wengen-Männlichen cable car and the Männlichen-Grindelwald gondola will close for maintenance and will not reopen until 25 May 2024. (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/mannlichen/#dates)

During the closure, you would need to take an alternative route to Grindelwald by train.

Make sure you check the timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/) for the final gondola down from Grindelwald First!

    Enjoy your trip!
