Low-cost souvenirs and chocolate in Switzerland?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler and their wife are visiting Switzerland in May and are looking for the cheapest souvenir shops and good, affordable chocolate stores. They want advice on where to find reasonably priced options during their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Check out Migros and Coop supermarkets for good prices on chocolate and souvenirs.
  • Be cautious with 'cheap' souvenirs as many are low quality or mass-produced.
  • Try local brands of chocolate at Coop, which often rank highly in taste tests and are budget-friendly.
  • Look for small and easy-to-pack items like pins or decals as souvenirs, rather than larger items.

    Hello jaziem93,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Take a look at these links for some tips on buying reasonably priced souvenirs and chocolate. I always find the chocolate in the Migros or Coop supermarkets quite sensibly priced, likewise in the larger Migros or Coop stores, they also have a good souvenir selection.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

I second Yolanda’s suggestion on COOP chocolate. A few years ago we bought 5 or 6 different chocolate bars of different brands at the COOP and did a comparison taste test. To our surprise, the COOP brand came in 1st or 2nd in each category compared to some of the other well known brands. And was a bargain price too. Switzerland has no shortage of great chocolate, but if you’re interested in getting good chocolate for a good price, look no further. And it is easy to pack and bring home.

But use discretion when shopping for cheap souvenirs. You can find good or at least reasonable quality items that are relatively inexpensive, but remember there is a reason most items are “cheap.” We usually went for small items like pins, shot glasses, and decals. Easy to pack, inexpensive, and simple reminders of our travels. And like chocolate, there is no shortage of souvenir shops in Switzerland either.

I have been shopping in Migros supermarkets since I was a baby in 1961, and still do. Migros and CooP own brand chocolate is better than branded chocolate – partly because it is (unlike some chocolate on the shelves even within Switzerland) usually made in Switzerland. Some of the big brands are now making chocolate up to 1000km away from Switzerland – so beware of that.

However, at the moment as elsewhere in Europe, Aldi has cheaper food products than either of the traditional Swiss supermarket groups.

Take care with ‘Swiss’ souvenirs; ‘cheap’ souvernirs (for example mugs, shot glasses are the same as you would find anywhere else in the world, but just have (for example) ‘London’ and a UK flag replaced with ‘Switzerland’ and a Swiss flag. Lots of things with Swiss flags, cows etc printed on in souvenir shops and kiosks are made in China
