we are going on rhine christmas market cruise starting from Basel 2 December. We are planning on 3 days in Montreux beforehand and have one more day before heading to Basel. Is Lucerne worth the trip even though their Christmas market doesnt open till week after? Should we go to Bern instead?

To answer your question: yes, Lucerne is very much worth a visit by that time of the year. It’s a lovely city with a highly atmospheric old town. There’s plenty to see and do for a one-day trip, even if the Christmas market isn’t open yet. Please see:
