    Hello,

My husband and I will be traveling on the Bernina Express on Sunday, May 5.  We have reservations from Lugano to St Moritz.  We are considering switching to standard trains so we could hop on and off. Maybe stopping at Diavolezza and taking the cable car up.  Is there a place to store our luggage at the train station?  Is there a fee?  Is it possible to hike down from the top at this time of year?

Also considering a stop at Morteratsch for a hike to the glacier.  Is that hike open this time of year?  Is there a place to store luggage there?  Is there a fee?

Is there a hike at Bernina Pass or Alp Grum open May 6? Luggage storage available?

Do you recommend one of those stops to hike more highly than the others?

    Thanks so much! Amy

    Hi Amy,

    >>> Maybe stopping at Diavolezza and taking the cable car up. Is there a place to store our luggage at the train station? Is there a fee? Is it possible to hike down from the top at this time of year?

There are no lockers at Diavolezza railway station. I believe there are some lockers in the valley station of the Diavolezza cable car, but as far as I know, they are only big enough for the sort of things you might take with you on a day trip, rather than for suitcases.

It’s not possibe to hike down, as the ski season doesn’t finish until 5 May. You can take the cable car up to enjoy the amazing views though, if the weather is clear. Neither the Swiss Travel Pass nor Swiss Half Fare card are valid though. If you are staying at least 2 nights in St Moritz, most accommodation providers will give you a guest card which provides free trips on the Diavolezza cable car (plus other mountain transport in the area plus trains and buses), but you would have to come back later after getting your guest card.

    >>> Also considering a stop at Morteratsch for a hike to the glacier. Is that hike open this time of year? Is there a place to store luggage there? Is there a fee?

There are no luggage lockers at Morteratsch railway station.

The trail is groomed for winter walking until mid-April. Track conditions might not be ideal for a while after that (snowy and/or muddy patches). You can check the status of the trail on the day you would like to do the walk:

    >>> Is there a hike at Bernina Pass or Alp Grum open May 6? Luggage storage available?

There are no luggage lockers at Alp Grüm railway station.

Alp Grüm is at just over 2,000 metres altitude, so it is unlikely that any hikes in the area would be open before mid-June.

If the day is clear, it is worth a stop at Alp Grüm for the wonderful views and perhaps to enjoy refreshments in the restaurant.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi AmyH,

Just circling back on your Diavolezza luggage question.  Slightly out of the way but an option is to leave your luggage at Pontresina rail station – there are facilities here.  It’s just under half an hour away.

Or you could arrange for your luggage to be transported to St.Moritz ahead of your train ride?  More information on this service here:

Unfortunately, most trails will not be open for walking till mid to late June.

If the weather is favourable and clear, you could visit Corvatsch for some amazing views. This would require you to take a bus from St. Moritz to Surlej.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you!  We will have 2 carry on bags.  Do you know if that could be stowed at the Diavolezza cable car station?

    Hi AmyH,

As Alpenrose mentioned, there are some lockers at Diavolezza cable car station but they may not be large enough for your carry on bags.

You may want to try and contact them directly and ask if them for dimensions or if they could even hold your carry ons for a few hours whilst you visit?

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
