Dii is planning a trip to Switzerland from March 24th to 30th and is curious about seeing both green valleys and snowy mountains. They’ve heard it may be largely snowy and are seeking recommendations for areas where they might spot greenery as well. Advice and suggestions for scenic train routes are also welcome.
Key takeaways:
Visit Ticino for a better chance of seeing green valleys, especially towards the end of March.
Consider the Poschiavo valley, which is along the scenic Bernina Express route.
The Centovalli route between Locarno and Domodossola offers beautiful landscapes and might have some green pastures.
Traveling from Zurich to Chur is a great plan to catch the Bernina Express.

We have planned to visit Switzerland in March (24th to 30th). When we booked we had thought that we would be able to see beautiful green valleys as well as snowy mountains. However, after reading many posts and threads about Switzerland, it seems like we would only get to see snow. Is there any slight possibility of seeing green valleys in any area of Switzerland?
What time in March are you coming? The later the better certainly. 🙂 You can still get green valleys in March for sure – are you heading to the Italian region at all? Ticino? You’ll have much better luck there with warmer weather and hence less snow at lower elevations.
Either way there could be a lot of or no snow in March in some areas – it may still be cold but there may not be snow on the ground….so green valleys but maybe not lush 😉

Many thanks for the quick reply. We will be in Switzerland from March 24th to 30th. We would like to see snow mountains, green valleys with cows mostly. Any areas you would recommend?
Also, which train line would you suggest for us to see beautiful scenaries?
Yeah I think it is too early for green pastures and grazing cows unfortunately.
I don’t know what your itinerary is but Ticino is your best bet. Also the Poschiavo valley could be an idea. It is along the Bernina Express line which is a scenic panoramic train between Chur and Tirano (in Italy).
Many thanks Lucas 🙂 We are planning to land in Zurich first and then go to Chur to get the Bernina Express on our 2nd day. Just wondering what is the best way to get to Ticino after taking Bernina Express?
Also, is Ticino a town or an area? If it’s an area, what would be the best place to stay?
Well I agree the places Lucas suggests are your best bet. If your primary goal is to see green valleys then head South.
The Centovalli between Locarno and Domodossola certainly has many valleys and pastures but how green they will be at the end of March I can’t say.
That route combined with the Bernina Express would give you a wide circle of Switzerland and give you the best chance to see what you are after plus the snow-covered Alps which attract most people.
