6 nights Grindelwald in May – itinerary, railpass feedback
A couple is planning their second trip to the Jungfrau/Interlaken region this May for one week, returning to Grindelwald as their base. They've already outlined a fun itinerary, looking for suggestions on activities, specifically regarding using the Swiss Half Fare Card and travel passes for exploring the area. They’re also aware that some attractions may be closed in May.
- Combine the Swiss Half Fare Card with the Jungfrau Travel Pass and Berner Oberland Pass for cost-effective travel options.
- Check if the Männlichen gondolas are operational around May 24, as they might be available during your visit.
- Consider adding some flexibility to your itinerary to accommodate changing weather or attraction availability.

Hello all! We are a 30 something year old couple visiting the Jungfrau/interlaken region for the second time this May 2025. We were very restricted with when we could travel and thus have booked for the third week of May. We will be there for just a week, spending 6 nights using Grindelwald as our base and one night in Zurich to fly home.
We spent 3 nights in Grindelwald in Oct 2023 and fell in love with it, we knew we had to use this as the base again. During that trip we went up to Grindelwald First and paraglided, then went back up on our own and hiked. On our other full day we spent it walking the pedestrian path from Lauterbrunnen and then up to Wengen just for 30 minutes/the view (it was getting dark).
We’re definitely going to get a half fare card and combine this with train passes. Depending on our final itinerary we will do 3 days on the Jungfrau Travel pass and 3 days on the Berner Oberland travel pass. Or we will switch out a few things and just do 6 days of the B.O. pass.
I know in May there are a lot of great things that are closed (Mannlichen & Schynige Platte) which is a bummer, but we will return to this region again someday in the summer no worries there.
Our itinerary so far is to start with the Jungfrau Travel Pass, and arrive in Grindelwald in the afternoon from Zurich. After relaxing a bit, we could go down to interlaken to walk around some of the shops and have dinner, and go up to Harder Kulm for sunset- one perk of spring is longer days so the sun won’t set until almost 9 pm.
Full Day 1, we’d go to Grindelwald First and do some hiking or possibly the fun activities they have up there. If we didn’t stay up there too long this could be a nice day to walk/hike the trails around Grindelwald village too.
Day 2- the final day on the Jungfrau pass- we want to go on a boat ride on Lake Brienz, take it all the way to the town of Brienz and spend the afternoon there and Geissbach falls.
Day 3 using the Berner Oberland pass, my travel partner is really interested in going to Oeschinensee… I know this is a bit of a day trip but I think if the visibility/weather is nice we are up for it.
Day 4- Go up the Schilthornbahn to the Schilthorn, spend some time up there. Make way down to Murren and ideally I’d like to hike to Gimmelwald from here but if we don’t have time/spend a while at the Schilthorn, we’d not spend time in Murren and instead go directly to the trail to Gimmelwald and walk around that village.
Day 5 we’d like to do one last day in the Lauterbrunnen valley- go up to Wengen in the morning, and depending on the previous day, we would either go up to Murren from Lauterbrunnen or take the pedestrian path through the valley and enjoy the serenity there.
Any and all suggestions or comments are appreciated! I can be long winded I apologize but thank you all for reading- we love Switzerland and can’t wait to be back!
