“Citibank Australia does not charge Citibank Plus everyday account holders a fee when they withdraw funds from an international ATM or use their Citibank Debit Card to make in-store purchases overseas. Customers may be charged by the third party provider, which Citibank Australia does not control.”

But by golly 4% of the transaction as an ATM fee is a bit fierce. That almost sounds like the ATM provider was charging a currency exchange fee. Most ATM charges I have ever seen are a fixed amount not a percentage.

I’m reading http://www.finder.com.au/trav el-money/switzerland but there is something contradictory about the high-lighted phrases in this extract:

A travel debit card lets you spend and withdraw in Switzerland like you would at home. Find a debit card that waives the international ATM withdrawal fee and you can make free ATM withdrawals when you use an ATM offered by a Swiss bank (banks in Switzerland and Europe do not charge a local ATM operator fee). If you’re an ING Orange Everyday account holder, you can also avoid ATM fees and international transaction fees as long as you’re depositing a minimum of $1,000 per month into your account and making at least five transactions monthly.

Westpac cardholders can avoid the international ATM fee by using Global Alliance ATMs in Switzerland. There are less than a handful of BNP Paribas and Deutsche Bank branches in Switzerland, using the Citibank Plus in Switzerland is the only viable way to avoid paying international ATM fees.”

Here’s a trap for young players that I’m sure I fell into on my last Swiss visit (my first overseas trip for over 25 years when Travellers Cheques were all the rage):

    Hi Adam,

I hope you got your Citi Global Cash account loaded up with CHF. Have you seen the way the exchange rate is headed? 😖

While American Express is widely accepted to pay for public transport and petrol as well as by the two largest retail stores Coop and Migros it is rejected by a lot of other businesses accepting MasterCard or Visa as their fees for American Express payments would much higher than for the other brands. Be therefore prepared not to be able to use your American Express card in smaller shops or restaurants. You will find even places accepting debit cards such as VPay or Maestro only.
