Is the Riviera Card enough for 4 days of sightseeing in Montreux?

Short summary – read this first

Queenie is spending 4 days in Montreux and is unsure if the hotel visitor card will be enough for sightseeing in the area. Her inquiry focuses on what the Montreux Riviera Card covers and whether she needs to purchase additional tickets for her planned trips.

Key takeaways:
  • The Montreux Riviera Card provides free travel on local trains and buses within Montreux and Vevey, but is limited in geographical coverage.
  • For attractions outside the card's area, like Geneva or Gruyeres, consider buying separate tickets.
  • If planning to travel outside the card area, consider getting the Half Fare Card for additional savings on transport.
  • The Riviera Card offers discounts on some attractions such as Fort Chillon and Chillon Castle.

    Hi Queenie,

It depends entirely on what your plans are.

You can find full details of what is covered by the Montreux Riviera Card here:

Note the limited geographical coverage and the limited discount for boats and mountain transport.

    Hope this helps you decide!

Queenie, we are spending six days there too, after Wengen, and for us it is nowhere near enough.

It does cover to Vevey and to Chillon as far as I can work out, but certainly not to other places we hope to visit such as Geneva, Gruyeres, boat trip to Yvoire and so on.

One big advantage of it though is 50% discount on some attractions such as Fort Chillon and Chillon Castle.

I know you were buying Saver Day Passes and so on for your trip.  Are you getting the Half Fare Card too?  That’s what we will do and it greatly reduces the costs for those last few days in Montreux.

    Hi Queenie,

The Montreux Riviera Card provides free travel on local trains and buses as well as a number of discounts to local attractions in Montreux and Vevey only. So whether this card is sufficient for 4 days depends on your travel plans. If you would like to do day trips outside of the validity area, you will need to buy additional transport tickets.

We stayed 10 days in Montreux, with a half fare card (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/)   and the Riviera Card. We could travel free within the Riviera Card area and just had to purchase additional fare to go further, for example past Vevey to Lausanne or Geneva.  We were staying in other parts of Switzerland after Montreux.

Hi DebH , no I haven’t bought the half fare  card because it was for a month and wasn’t cost effective for me. When are you in Montreux? I will be there 26-30 September.

We are there for 19 days so close enough to a month to make it worthwhile.  It works out much cheaper for us than the Swiss Travel Pass.  We are combining it with a six day Berner Oberland pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/)  while we are in Wengen, and it pretty well pays for itself just with that.

Like you we are doing the Glacier Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-express/ ), Bernina Express ( https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/bernina-express/) and we are also doing the Goldenpass (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/)  , so we got half fare on all the Saver Day Passes (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/)  .  Finally we will use it for our final six days in Montreux.

We are there later than you, in mid October.  We arrive on 11th October and fly home to Melbourne on 17th October.

Thank you Queenie.  You too, hopefully you can post how things go on here.  I will try to do the same.
