You can find more information about the Morteratsch Glacier hike here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/morteratschglacier. From Pontresina, you can get a train to Morteratsch. The trail starts from the train station. I suggest storing you luggage at Pontresina station which has a left luggage service as well as luggage lockers. By the way, Pontresina would be a nice town to explore and is not very far to walk to St Moritz.

Other places you could stop for one hour before continuing north are Alp Grum (well known restaurant/ cafe, great views) and Berguen Bravuogn (Albula railway museum and lovely typical Swiss alpine village)
I think the glacier views (of the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers) and mountains from Berghaus Diavolezza are spectacular and a “must-see” stop in this area. You can also hike very close to the glaciers at this location. Get off the train at the stop “Bernina Diavolezza” (1.5 hrs after departing Tirano; or 20 minutes from Pontresina if on the way to Tirano) and take the gondola to Berghaus Diavolezza, located a few steps away from the train stop.

In case you’re not familiar with “request” stops, the Morteratsch stop is one, so you’ll need to press the button in advance to be sure that the train stops there. If you happen to be on the the official “Bernina Express” train, it does not stop there even if you press the button. This past June, I had to go all the way to Pontresina (from Tirano) and then backtrack to Morteratsch on the next regular train headed back toward the Morteratsch train stop. By the way, I loved staying at the Hotel Morteratsch and had a great view of the the trains going by and/or stopping there. The hike to the glacier is easy and I recommend going early in the day to avoid the crowds. We walked out to the glacier from the hotel at 8:30 a.m. and saw only a few people but on our way back we met LOTS of people heading to the glacier, including groups. We also took an evening walk out and that was lovely too – nice and quiet with few people.
