Mountain excursion prices with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a 15-day trip to Switzerland in September and is trying to budget for various mountain excursions using their Swiss Travel Pass. They are confused about the initial costs for trips like Pilatus, Jungfraujoch, and Matterhorn, particularly whether the prices listed include a round trip or just one way.

Key takeaways:
  • Always check the official mountain websites for the definitive pricing and details on excursions.
  • Use the SBB timetable to find full prices for any journey, keeping in mind it usually shows half fare prices by default.
  • Remember that tickets are valid for the entire day you purchase them, so no need to rush for a specific departure.
  • If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, most excursions are 50% off, so factor that into your budgeting.

According to http://www.pilatus.ch/en/booking/prices/ the return fare from/to Kriens/Alpnachstad is CHF72.

All mountains have their own websites which provide the definitive pricing. Google away or search for the pages for individual mountains on MySwissAlps. There is usually a link to the official website towards the bottom of the “Route” tab. For example, http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/gettingthere.

    Hello Art2164,

Nice to hear you’re still preparing for your stay in September.

DO make sure to keep an eye on the current situation with the virus to be on the safe side. Information and links can be found in this link:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/does-the-corona-virus-affect-trips-to-switzerland

As for your question regarding the prices of mountain excursions holding the Swiss Travel Pass, you can find an overview of the discounts in below link, also make sure you check the pdf map for visual input:

The most reliable way to find out the “full” price of a journey is to use the SBB timetable, check a connection and continue to “purchase” the ticket (which of course you don’t in the end). You then need to DOUBLE the price you see there to get a full fare for that route, as the webpage per default shows the “half fare” prices.

Tickets are normally valid for the ENTIRE DAY you purchase it for, so you’re not limited to any specific connection.

Please find a handy spreadsheet to support your calculations in below link:

    Hope this helps.

    Best,
    Steph

    Hi shu krishna,

GA travelcard is primarily for Swiss residents and it is valid for at least 4 months, it offers free travel just as the Swiss Travel Pass.

As a tourist, you can best buy the Swiss Travel Pass (you can buy it here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price).

Read more about the differences between the Swiss Travel Pass and the GA travelcard at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/details.
