Mt Rigi or Pilatus as half a day trip?

Short summary – read this first

A family of four is visiting Lucerne from May 16th to 18th and wants to know if they can visit both Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi in one afternoon. They're interested in hiking and prefer evening leisure in Lucerne, looking for great drinking and dining spots with views.

Key takeaways:
  • You can visit both Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi in one afternoon, but planning is key.
  • Use the Swiss timetable to organize your trips efficiently between the two mountains.
  • The cogwheel train to Mt. Pilatus may be closed until mid-May, so check the schedule before you go.
  • Consider taking the train to Alpnachstad for a quicker route to Mt. Pilatus rather than using the boat.
  • Look for restaurants or cafes in Lucerne with terrace views for a great evening out.

We are coming into Lucerne from Zurich and wondering if going to Mt Pilatus or Rigi can be done in an afternoon or are they full day trips. We are in Lucerne for 2 nights may 16th – 18th – Is it worth it to try and do both mts. We are a family of four and hope to do a bit of hiking also as sounds like hikes available up on the mts. we dont want to rush thru them.. We are not really intersted in spending too much time in Lucerne proper except in the evening. Also any nice places to get a drink or a bite with a great view we should try and seek out . thanks for responses

    Hi zittelm,

They can be done in an afternoon. It’s even doable to do both in one day. Please use the Swiss timetable to plan your trip.

These pages will explain how to get to each mountain top:

The cogwheel train Alpnachstad-Pilatus Kulm is closed for winter, and will reopen some time in the first half of May, depending on weather conditions. At the beginning of May, you can start checking whether or not it has reopened: http://www.pilatus.ch/en/nc/l ive/.

We have listed some hikes in the area on our webpage here: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne/activities.

Thank you. Are they that much different to take the time to do both. Should we fire go the boat ride on the lake. For one of them. ?

Yes, they are different. You would save time by taking the train to Alpnachstad on your way to Pilatus, instead of the boat.
