Car or train to get to Grindelwald area for 5 days

Short summary – read this first

A family of 5 is visiting Switzerland for 5 days in the second week of June and will stay in Grindelwald. They are wondering whether to rent a car from Zurich Airport along with Bernese Oberland Passes or buy a Swiss Travel Pass for public transport instead. Any advice on travel logistics is welcome.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using public transport as it is efficient and convenient, with frequent train and bus services available.
  • If you choose to rent a car, ensure it is large enough for your family and luggage, and be prepared for navigation challenges.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass may be the best option for ease of travel for your entire stay, but check if the Bernese Oberland Pass fits your itinerary better.
  • Use online resources to compare train and car travel options to make an informed decision.

We are a family of 5 visiting Switzerland in 2nd week of June for 5 days. We have booked a place to stay in Grindelwald. Some must see places on our list are: (other suggestions welcome)

Jungfraujouch Top of the world, Grindelwald First, Mount Titlis

Our rental place is 1.5 km from a train station in Gridelwald (obviously reasonably priced). We are travelling in/out of Switzerland from Zurich. Should we rent car from Zurich Airport and add Bernese Oberland Passes, or buy a Swiss Pass (which will have to be for 8 days) drop the car rental option and travel from/to Zurich by train?

Any advice will be really appreciated.

Hello M Abbas, and welcome to MySwissAlps,

Check out this link to compare driving and punlic transport : http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain

Public transport in Switzerland is very efficient, much more so than in any country you might know. For one thing, you don’t have to reserve your seats, and if you miss a train, there will be another one an hour, or in some case 30 minutes, later. In Grindelwald, there is a bus network with several lines, so that there is most probably a bus stop close to your residence. If that is a hotel, they will give each of you a free bus pass for the duration of your stay.

If you choose to rent a car, keep in mind that, being five persons with luggage, it would have to be a large car, and then it would be up to you to find the road, drive thhrough unknown cities, find petrol stations, find where to return it, etc. I’m not sure the extra flexibility is worth it…

The simple way to a perfect Swiss trip

    Hello M Abbas,

I would also choose the option of traveling by public transport all the way, as the services are good and easy to use, as said by Snowman.

For details on the two rail passes you mention please use below links:

For arrival and departure day you can also look at either regular point-to-point tickets, a Saver Day Pass or a so-called supersaver ticket, whereas with the later you have to note that you are bound to ONE SPECIFIC train, so maybe not recommendable for arrival.
