Zermatt summer ski trip: Täsch-Zermatt route, best tickets, ski hire

Short summary – read this first

Mansi, a traveler, is planning a summer ski trip for her family of 11 to Zermatt, Switzerland, in June. They are seeking advice on how to reach the ski area from Zermatt, whether to rent skis in advance, and the best transport tickets since they won't have a Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train from Täsch to Zermatt; it’s only a 12-minute ride with trains every 20 minutes.
  • You can easily rent skis upon arrival in Zermatt at local shops.
  • Purchase a 24-hour return point-to-point ticket for transport, as you won't need a rail pass.

    Hello
We are planning a trip to Switzerland I need help to figure out my plans for summer skiing
we are a big family of 11 ( 6 adults , 2 teens and 3 young ones) and we are touring Switzerland in June 2025
Our kids are very good skiers – we stay in Colorado and ski here a lot.
They want to see if they can ski The amazing Alps in summer . I looked up and Zermatt is open year round – Matterhorn Glacier Place I believe

We do have our own car till Tasch and then will take a ride to Zermatt and will be staying there for 2 nights

    My questions are

    1. What is the best way to get up there from Zermatt – we all would go up with the kids but only the kids are going to ski
    2. Is it better to rent skis earlier or is it possible to rent when we reach there
    3. Which tickets are best to buy for the Transport from Zermatt and back – one day only
    4. We wont be having any Kind of Swiss trave pass or Half price Pass .

    Thank you
    Mansi

    Hi Mansi,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans and that’s great you are keen to ski in Zermatt.

    In answer to your questions:

    1.  Coming from Täsch, the only way to reach Zermatt is by train.  It’s a short 12 minute train ride.  Trains are every 20 minutes.  Use the Swiss timetable so you can research and plan your train ride.  (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/)
    2.  You can definitely rent your skis when you arrive in Zermatt.  There are quite a few sport shops in Zermatt itself.
    3.  Given you won’t have any rail pass, your best option for a day visit, is to purchase a 24 hour return point-to-point ticket. All information on point-to-point tickets can be found here, there are some purchase options too:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/point-to-point/
