Netherlands – Andermatt by train with bicycle

Short summary – read this first

Everton is planning to bike along the Eurovelo 15 route from Andermatt to Hoek van Holland and needs help with bicycle reservations for trains in Switzerland. He found affordable tickets from the Netherlands to Andermatt but is unsure about how to reserve a bike ticket after purchasing his journey with Deutsche Bahn. He prefers a single ticket for the entire trip for convenience and refunds.

Key takeaways:
  • You need a bike ticket to take your bicycle on public transport in Switzerland.
  • Reservations for bicycles are mandatory on Intercity, EuroCity, and night trains.
  • Check the Swiss railway website for dedicated sections on bike tickets and reservations.

    Hi all,

I decided to get my bike and take the Eurovelo 15 route along the Rhein river, starting in Andermatt towards Hoek van Holland, in the Netherlands.

After searching for some options, I found out that Deutsche Bahn (http://www.bahn.com/en) has an amazing searching mechanism, allowing me to choose bicycle transport, time of connections, etc.

So, I selected my options (including the bike!) and the ticket for the complete trip from Delft (Netherlands) to Andermatt is quite affordable, although the journey is broken down in several connections.

I was about to buy the tickets, but then I got the message that I could buy ONLY the tickets, but NOT the bike reservation. The apparent reason is because DB can only ensure bike tickets for internal trips in Germany.

So, I tried to find information on how to buy bicycle tickets in Switzerland. I found some places telling me to buy a half-priced ticket, which would be valid for my bike, but I could not find anything instructing how to buy ONLY a bike ticket (or reservation) if I already have a ticket, purchased from an international company – like DB, in my case.

As a personal preference, I would prefer to buy only one ticket from origin to destination, because: 1) it’s cheaper than buying several tickets for smaller journeys and 2) because if I want to cancel or if I have issues, I can get refunded on my whole trip.

Does anyone can help me with that?

    Thank you very much!

    Cheers,

    Everton
