Swiss rail passes for temporary resident – 1 year
Leow, a family of five staying in Geneva for eight months, is looking for the best travel pass options to explore Switzerland on weekends. They want advice on family passes and half-fare tickets since they won't travel much on weekdays and are also considering renting a car to save money.
- Consider getting the Half Fare Card for significant savings on train travel, which might be available through your residence permit.
- If you have children aged 6-15, get the Junior Card to allow them to travel for free when you purchase a Half Fare Card.
- The Swiss Family Card can be applied with the Half Fare Card to let kids travel for free, but it’s specifically for tourists only.

Hi,
We are a family of 5 (3 kids) will be in Geneva for 8 months.
We would like to travel on and off and especially during weekends to other parts of Swiss.
What travel pass is most suitable?
I read about half fare with family pass available for 1 month to a year. But we don’t travel that often, as i am working during weekdays.
Is there any other good options? Is there half fare tickets for weekends with family card?
What about car rental during weekend?
We are considering all option in order to save money.
Merci !
Leow
