No direct trains Lucerne – Zurich Airport in 2024

Short summary – read this first

RolandP shares important news about train travel in Switzerland, specifically noting that from mid-December 2023 to mid-December 2024, trains between Lucerne and Zurich Airport will require passengers to change at Zurich HB due to a major bridge renovation. This information is especially useful for travelers planning their trips in 2024, ensuring they are aware of potential travel disruptions.

Key takeaways:
  • Changing trains at Zurich HB is manageable, thanks to escalators and clear signage.
  • For a scenic option, consider changing trains at Arth-Goldau instead of Zurich HB.
  • If you travel with luggage, platforms at Olten and Arth-Goldau are equipped with elevators and ramps, making transfers easier.

Hi, I realised that as well for our journey on SUN 4th June when we will be taking the train to Meiringen from Zurich airport via Luzern.

I see an option to change trains at Olten for Luzern instead of Zurich HB.

Are you able to advise if changing trains at Olten is convenient – its from Platform 4 to Platform 12?

Thank you for this information. I’m currently planning an itinerary for myself and friends for 2024, so this is very helpful to know since I usually take the direct train to Luzern upon arrival at ZRH. While it is not a problem to change at the main station in Zurich, it is good to know in advance.

    Hi traveljet,

Just a note. This is affecting travel from mid-December 2023 to mid-December 2024. You are traveling in a few weeks time, this coming June or will you be coming again next year?

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Yolanda, even though it is not part of this topic, there is indeed construction works between Zug and Lucerne on the weekend of 4 June 2023, affecting the trains Lucerne-Zurich. A replacement bus is operating, but with baggage not very convenient!

I suggest to travel via Olten or Arth-Goldau and to change there for the connection to Lucerne. Via Arth-Goldau is more scenic.

I posted the information regarding the line closure in Zurich now, because some users already started to plan their 2024 vacation.

    Have a nice Sunday,

    Roland

Hi Roland, thanks for the tip about Arth-Goldau being more scenic. We are arriving after a 12hr flight, so the less hassle for change of trains with luggage will be priority. Do you have any idea whether the change of platforms in Olten is straightforward or require ups and down staircases?

Yolanda – I checked the sbb timetable for the 4th June and there is no direct train to Luzern.

Olten and Arth-Goldau have both, elevators and ramps.

    All good Roland P,

    Thank you for clarifying.

We very much appreciate your advance advice for this information as yes, many are already planning their trips for 2024.

I was simply clarifying with the member the date was for this year or the next. I guess, as it transpires as you have kindly advised – there are construction works per the date mentioned too this year.

Thank you again, and yes a good Sunday ahead.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
