Interlaken to Geneva via the GoldenPass route with Saver Day Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Interlaken to Geneva and is looking for clarity on the train services. They are confused about the GoldenPass route and whether a direct train exists between the two cities. Additionally, they want to know if their Saver Day Pass, paired with their Swiss Half Fare Card, covers the entire journey without needing additional tickets.

Key takeaways:
  • To travel from Interlaken to Geneva via the scenic GoldenPass Express, switch trains in Montreux for connections to Geneva.
  • The Saver Day Pass covers the entire route, meaning no additional tickets are needed, but it's recommended to book seats on the GoldenPass Express.

I am planning to travel from Interlaken to Geneva. I see that there is a Golden Pass train that runs between the two cities. But when I check the SBB website, I can only see golden pass running from Interlaken to Spiez and then I have to transfer to normal intercity trains. Is this correct? Can’t I take a direct train from Interlaken to Geneva? Can someone share some clarity on this please?

Also, I am planning to take a Saver day pass for this day (along with Swiss half fare card that I already hold)? Does this entire route gets covered with a saver day pass? If I have a saver day pass, can I travel without purchasing a ticket?

    Thank you!

    Hi kkarthik72,

If you want to travel on scenic train to Geneva from Interlaken, I suggest  taking the GoldenPass Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/) direct service to Montreux. In Montreux, there are regular train connections to Geneva.

With the Saver Day Pass, this whole journey is covered (no need to purchase rail tickets): https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/. However it’s recommended to book your seats on the GoldenPass Express.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi kkarthik,

    >>> when I check the SBB website, I can only see golden pass running from Interlaken to Spiez and then I have to transfer to normal intercity trains. Is this correct? Can’t I take a direct train from Interlaken to Geneva? Can someone share some clarity on this please?

Firstly, there are no direct services from Interlaken Ost to Geneva.

Secondly, what you are probably seeing on the SBB timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/)  are the fastest trips. The SBB timetable defaults to generating the fastest trips from your start to your destination. These routes tend to avoid the mountains by diverting around them or travelling underneath them in a tunnel.

If you want to take a slower journey through the mountains, such as the Goldenpass, you need to specify one or more “via” stations when searching for connections.

Anna provided you with a link where you can learn all about the Goldenpass trains. How to bring up the Goldenpass route in the timetable by specifying “via” stations is also explained on that page, under the heading “Planning your GoldenPass journey with the timetable”.

At Montreux, you change to a normal train to Geneva.

    Hope this clarifies things!
