Boarding train with my luggage + storage options Lenzburg-Thun-Zurich

Short summary – read this first

Laura and her daughter are visiting Switzerland for the first time from July 8-15, with a Swiss Travel Pass. They need advice on handling large suitcases while traveling by train to Lenzburg and during a short trip to Thun and Interlaken.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take your large suitcases directly onto Swiss trains without checking them.
  • Use luggage lockers at larger Swiss stations, including Lenzburg, to store your bags while you explore.
  • Consider the SBB station-to-station luggage transport service to send your bags ahead for convenience.

Hello- My 22 year old daughter and I are traveling from the US to Switzerland for the first time and have relied heavily on this site for our planning – thank you!

We have a Swiss Travel Pass for our visit July 8-15. I have 2 questions related to riding the train with 2 large suitcases as well as storing luggage for a 2-3 day trip to Thun and Interlaken.

    1) We fly into Zurich Airport and our hotel is in Lenzburg.  We will take the the train from the airport to our Lenzburg hotel. Can we just walk onto the train with our large suitcases (they have wheels) or do we need to ‘check’ our bags…and if so- what is that process.

    2) We will leave Lenzburg to spend two nights at a hotel in Thun and travel back to Zurich to stay at a different hotel that is near the airport, ie, different hotel than our departure point in Lenzburg. We do not need our big suitcases for this 2 night, 3 day trip to explore Interlaken/Jungfrau. However since we are departing from Lenzburg and returning to Zurich, we wondered if you have recommendations for storing the big bags or do you think iyt is just less logistically easier to take them with us?

Thank you for consideration. It was silly of me not to think of this earlier- i was initially thinking i could ask the hotel to keep them but forgot we are returning from Thun/Interlaken to a different hotel. Take care- Laura

    Laura.

‘Can we just walk onto the train with our large suitcases (they have wheels) or do we need to ‘check’ our bags…and if so- what is that process.’

On all trains in Switzerland you just walk onto the trains with your bags.

Note that there are no through trains from Zurich Airport to Lenzburg.  You will have to change at Zurich city centre station, known as ‘Zurch Hauptbahnhof’.

Get any train from Zurich Airport to Zurich Hauptbahnhof.  (Note that most of these trains will be bound for destinations ‘the other side of’ Zurich’, possibly as far away as Geneva!)  Takes between 10 and 15 minutes.   At Zurich Hbf there are fast trains to Lenzburg at 08 and 38 past each hour, the journey is just nineteen minutes.  The trains at 08 past the hour carry the line number IR37 and will be going to either Basel or Aaarau.  The trains at 38 past the hour will carry the line number RE37, and will be bound for Aarau.  (In my experience the RE37 train is usually not very busy.)

There is also an S11 stopping train service to Aarau via Lenzburg.  They depart from platforms 41 or 42 at 29 and 59 minutes past the hour.  The journey is slower – 34 minutes.

On the luggage point, most larger Swiss stations have lockers in which you can leave luggage.  (In German – ‘Schliessfacher’)  I went to Swiss railways website and Lenzburg does have lockers.  You can leave luggage in a locker for up to 96 hours.  The ‘hire charge’ is going to be quite a lot but will be worth it.

    Very best wishes

    Roger

    Hi Lah,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you don’t want to bring your suitcases along on your travel to Thun and Interlaken, and you don’t want to leave them in the lockers in Lenzburg, you have the option to use SBB station-to-station luggage transport service. So you drop off your bags at Lenzburg station and pick them up at Zurich HB in 2 days, I think the charges are CHF12 per bag (no more than 23kg). You can find further information here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/luggage/ (scroll down to the bottom for the SBB luggage services links)

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Lah

Anna’s suggestion looks better than my suggestion.  In particualr, it is likely to be cheaper.

    Best wishes
