Palm Express Bus from St Moritz to Lugano

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Alex is looking for the easiest way to get from St. Moritz to Lugano, initially considering the Palm Express bus, but worried it might not be operating. They want to know about alternatives and whether renting a car for a day would be expensive.

Key takeaways:
  • The Palm Express bus operates only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the low season, which lasts until June 12, but runs daily from June 13 to October 23.
  • Always check the online Swiss timetable for accurate bus availability based on your travel date.
  • Renting a car for one day might be costly, but it's not necessary given public transport options.

    Hi All,

I understand that the shortest and easiest route from St Moritz to Lugano is by Palm Express Bus (~4 hrs). However it seems to me that it has stopped operation.

The Bernina Express needs to transit at Tirano and take total of 6 hrs (train + bus) which seems too long for me.

    Is there other alternatives?

Is it expensive to rent a car for 1 day from St moritz to Lugano?

Any feedback and advice is most welcome.

    thanks

    Hi Alexemail88,

I’m not aware of issues with that bus. It still operates. You’ll find it in the timetable, along with alternatives (via Thusis for example): http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. The Palm Express schedule can be found here as well: http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadmin/fap_pdf_fields/2022/90.631.pdf.

A one-way car rental will likely be pricey but I don’t have rates. It won’t be necessary though 🙂

    Thanks Arno.

I tried the timetable link but could not find palm express bus option. Is there another link where i can book the palm express directly?

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

The pdf Arno linked to shows that the Palm Express bus isn’t available on all dates. This is explained in the legend (“Zeichenerklärung” in German) at the bottom. I understand that’s not easy to interpret :-).

The Palm Express bus runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only in low season, which lasts until June 12. It’s available on all days of the week from June 13 to October 23. So if you enter a date in the online Swiss timetable on which the Palm Express isn’t operational, it won’t show up. If you enter a “correct” date it should work and you should see a direct bus connection leaving from St. Moritz at 10.25 and taking 3h59.

Here’s a direct link to details and reservation options: http://www.postauto.ch/en/excursion-tips/palm-express.

Yes, like all transport timetables with no or limited low season operation you will not find it in online schedules if you choose a date when a service does not operate.

The best way to see all timetables is the on line PDF version of the Swiss National Timetable:
