Pilatus Golden Round Trip in August with toboggan run: which direction

Short summary – read this first

A family with two teens is planning their first day in Lucerne and wants to celebrate their daughter's 19th birthday by visiting Mount Pilatus. They are deciding whether to do the toboggan run on the way up or on the way back, seeking advice on the best approach for their trip scheduled for late August.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the boat first and then the cogwheel train to Mount Pilatus for a more relaxed experience.
  • Make seat reservations for the busy boat section to ensure you have guaranteed seats.
  • No reservations are needed for the cableway on the way back, allowing you to enjoy your time at Pilatus and the toboggan run without rushing.

We are a family with 2 teens who obviously are not necessarily early risers, however we’d like to do mount Pilatus on our first day in Lucerne. The toboggan run is a must, so wondering whether to do this on the way up and then boat back or the reverse. Travelling end of august and this first day in Switzerland will be my daughters 19th, so want to get it right!

    thanks all

    Hi tanyamow bray!

How nice that you’ll be doing this beautiful trip with your daughter’s birthday! The exact direction doesn’t matter that much: logistically and in terms of scenery, both options are perfectly fine.

One reason to first take the boat and travel up by cogwheel train from Alpnachstad is that seat reservations are highly recommended for this busy section. With reservations, you can be sure of seats on your way up and you’ll have a fixed departure time. Reservations are not necessary for the cableway trip on your way back, so you won’t be tied to specific departure times when traveling down. This way, you can take all the time you want both at Pilatus and at the cableway mid-station Fräkmüntegg, where the toboggan run is located. If you’d travel the other way around and make seat reservations for the cogwheel train Pilatus-Alpnachstad, you’d have to time your activities more carefully, which might be less relaxed.

I hope this helps you decide!
