Pilatus itinerary including toboggan Fräkmüntegg

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Mt. Pilatus and the Golden route on September 5th, 2023. They want advice on whether to go anti-clockwise, considering their interest in the Tobaggon ride at Frakmuntegg and whether crowds will be a concern. Their proposed schedule includes starting early in Lucerne and enjoying the attractions throughout the day.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider starting with the gondola from Kriens to ensure you have enough time for the Tobaggon ride before the crowds arrive.
  • Even in September, starting early helps to avoid long lines for popular attractions.
  • Make sure to check the weather as it can affect the overall experience at Mt. Pilatus.

So, just doing some preliminary research for a trip in Sep 2023. I plan to do Mt. Pilatus and considering the Golden route either clockwise or anti-clockwise. I have heard many suggestions to do this anti-clockwise, i.e. starting with the Kriens to Mt. Pilatus journey via Gondola and ending with the boat trip from Alnachstadt to Lucerne. However, I am also interested in doing the Tobaggon ride at Frakmuntegg. Per my research this ride opens only at 10am.

Given that I would like to do the Tobaggon ride does the anti-clockwise direction still make sense? Since that direction is mainly to avoid the crowds for the Cogwheel train up Mt. Pilatus is this even an issue in September as I know the crowds start thinning by then? The exact date i’ve planned for this at this time is September 5th.

Here is what I am thinking (anti-clockwise):

8:30 AM Lucerne to Kriens (Bus 15 mins)

9:00 AM Kriens to Frakmuntegg (20 mins)

    9:30 AM Arr Frakmuntegg

10am – 12pm Tobaggon ride (is this much time required?)

12:00 PM Up to Mt. Pilatus (4 mins)

    12 pm – 3 pm At Mt. Pilatus [ 3 hrs ]

    3:00 PM Cogwheel train down

    3:30 PM Arr Alpnachstadt

4:37 PM Boat Alpnachstadt back to Lucerne

    5:45 PM Arr Lucerne

Schedules were taken from the official transportation websites

Personally I think going up the cable car spoils the Pilatus visit. Going up the cogwheel (UK and ‘Swiss English’ – rack railway) gives much more a sense of ‘adventure ‘ because it is so steep and historic (they had to invent a special rack system to cope with the steep line)

    Hi Johnny4111,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

You can start the Golden Round Trip in either direction. If your main intention is to ride the toboggan on Frakmuntegg, I personally recommend starting with taking the gondola from Kriens. This is a popular attraction and arriving early might help you beat the queue. Then you’ll have enough time for the visit to the summit and make the return trip to Lucerne via the cogwheel train and boat.

You can find more information about the round trip here: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus

    Regards,

    Anna

Thanks for the responses! Yeah, this is a tough decision, I see the value in taking the cogwheel train up as it’s the steepest and probably best experienced in the uphill direction. If I do it in the clockwise direction i’m thinking it may be a big tight but there is still adequate time to ride the Toboggan, will think about this a bit more!

    Hi Johnny4111,

I, personally, do not think that it makes a huge difference which way you go up and down, if the weather is nice, Pilatus (http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus) will be a good experience in either direction. 🙂

    Take care,

    Ildiko
