Does Swiss two prong adapter work in Italy/Austria

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is preparing for their first trip to the Schengen zone and wants advice on power adapters for Switzerland and neighboring countries. They are specifically concerned about whether to bring a two-round-pin adapter for their chargers, which have three rectangular pins, and if that adapter will work in Italy and Austria too. Moving forward, they hope to make sure their devices can charge easily.

Key takeaways:
  • It's best to bring a universal adapter for compatibility across Switzerland, Italy, and Austria.
  • Check with your hotel about adapter availability, but it's safer to bring your own.
  • Swiss plugs use a 'lozenge' type socket, so a universal adapter is highly recommended.

    Good morning!

A few more days to our maiden trip to the Schengen zone and I just got a concern about a practical question:I gather that in Switzerland use two plug types are used:plugs with two round pins and those with three round pins. Our mobile phone chargers have three rectangular shaped pins.Is it better to bring an adapter with two round pins?I checked with some hotels that I will stay. Some said they have adapters some said they do not.I will also be travelling to Italy and Austria. If I buy an adapter with two round pins will I be able to use them in those countries as well?

    Thanks!

You should obtain a universal adapter then you should have no problem in any countries. You need to be slightly careful of a Swiss only adapter as Swiss plugs now almost all have the ‘lozenge’ type socket, which may not be the case in Italy or France.
