Problems with online purchase of Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Certainap is struggling to purchase Swiss Travel Passes online, facing payment failures despite having a confirmed bank account. They want advice on alternative purchasing options and customer support contact information.

Key takeaways:
  • Check alternative websites like happyrail.com for easier purchasing of the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • If using the SBB website and facing issues, remember you don't need an account to buy the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • For your trip from Wengen to Venice, you only need tickets from Domodossola to Venice if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass on the Swiss leg of the journey.
  • You can store your Swiss Travel Pass PDF on your phone, but it's a good idea to carry a printed version as well.

I’ve been trying to purchase our Swiss Travel Passes during the last 24 hours with great difficulty. (Last Fall I purchased them online with no problem at all). At this point, my SBB account is set up and is linked to Ticket Shop, but each time I get a message: “Payment Failed.” I’ve checked with my bank, there is no issue with my credit card, and they suggest it is a website issue. Is there a Customer Support phone number I can call? It is not clear on the website.

    Thank you for any help.

    Hi Certainap,

I recommend buying from one of the websites listed here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price. If you prefer to buy from SBB then buy from their tourist web shop: https://shop.switzerla ndtravelcentre.com/#/e n/home.

The domestic SBB website is pretty complex and known for payment issues with foreign credit cards. You don’t need an account with them to buy or use a Swiss Travel Pass. I’m not aware of an international number to call, but their tourist web shop has one if needed.

I hope this helps you out!

Thank you for the information, Arno. I am finding the SBB website less user-friendly this year. Happyrail.com made the process of buying a Swiss Travel Pass so much easier!

I would like to make the necessary reservations and ticket purchase for our trip from Wengen to Venice. The SBB website does not give me an option to apply the Swiss Travel Pass as it did in 2017. How can I make the reservation to Venice and also purchase the ticket? I really appreciate your help.

You’re welcome! The SBB site is geared to residents so does not show the Swiss Travel Pass. But if you have a valid Swiss Travel Pass that day you don’t need any tickets for the Swiss leg of your trip. All you need is Domodossola to Venice tickets. I don’t know your travel date but I just found tickets for the 10:17 AM direct train from Domodossola for only €18: https://www.happyrail. com/en/depart?from=domodossola&to=ci ty-venezia. This includes reserved seats and avoids changing trains in Milan.

Hi there… I’m coming to Suisse next week to spend time in Wengen, and Zurich.. and I just bought my swiss travelpass for 8 days (2 people) via the SBB site (Switzerland Travel Centre) without any problems at all. My visa processed immediately… Now my question is this.. and I’m sure this topic has already been covered. My apologies… but my searches among the topics didn’t show it.. so . here I am! 🙂 …. ok.. so I received via e-mail my passes and I printed them out.. But I seem to remember reading somewhere in this site that the Swiss travelpass can be downloaded to my phone (via an app????) and I don’t have to carry around the paper pass I printed out… but when I look at the various webpages for here and for SBB, I see nothing about that… Can you guys help me? Merci, Danke, thanks! – Ung

    Hi Ung,

Glad to hear your purchase went smoothly! You can store the PDF file (the pass) on your phone. You don’t need an app for that. But nevertheless you need to carry the printout too. You can fold it so it won’t be inconvenient. You’ll find this explained in the first link in my first post above.

    Have a good trip!
