Public holidays during our stay in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Zurich on 25 April and exploring Switzerland with a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass. They plan to be in Montreux on 1 May and are concerned about transportation and accommodation due to potential public holidays. They also mention a departure on 10 May and seek advice on any travel issues during that time.

Key takeaways:
  • 1 May is not a national holiday in Montreux; it will be a normal day.
  • On 10 May, public transportation may run less frequently due to Ascension Day, so check the Swiss timetable for details.
  • Hotels, restaurants, and mountain transport in the high Alps may be shut down in late April and early May, so consider booking accommodation in advance.

Hello, we are arriving in Zurich on 25 April, travelling on a 15 day STP. We want to keep our itinerary as flexible as possible but will probably be in Montreaux on 1 May, which from what I can gather, is a National Holiday. Should we anticipate any problems re transportation, accommodation, sight seeing etc. We were hoping to be able to book our accommodation a day or two ahead. Also, 10 May seems also to be a public holiday. We will be departing Basel by train for Amiens France on that day. Should we anticipate any problems that day. Any help from your wonderful site would be much appreciated.

    Hi strahandg,

The 1st. of May isn’t a national holiday in Montreux. In some cantons it is, but it isn’t in the canton of Vaud. It’s just a normal day.

The 10th. of May is a pubic holiday. It’s Ascension Day. You won’t have any problems with public transportation, however, some trains, buses etc. might run less frequently. The Swiss timetable will show you all the information I would recommend to use it when planning your trip. It’s a public holiday in France as well, but the timetable will give you the details for the complete trip.

Please keep in mind that in April and early May lot of hotels, restaurants and mountain transports in the high Alps will be shutdown. Depending on your itinerary, you may not want to wait for the very last minute to book an hotel and explore already availability.
