Timetables for train travel Zermatt to Milan

Short summary – read this first

Linda is planning to travel from Zermatt to Milan and wants to know about train schedules and connections. She learned that trains run twice an hour from Zermatt to Visp but only six Eurocity trains daily from Brig to Milan, and she's looking for advice on whether to use a Swiss Travel Pass or the Swiss half-fare card for her trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Trains run twice per hour from Zermatt to Visp, but you need to catch one of the 6 Eurocity trains daily from Brig to Milan to complete your journey.
  • Avoid the Panoramic Express train marked PE, which requires a mandatory reservation.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers your trip up to Domodossola; you'll need a separate ticket for the last leg to Milan.
  • To determine the best pass for your travels, consider all the journeys you'll make in Switzerland, not just this one.

Just avoid any train marked PE for Panoramic Express. That’s the Glacier Express which requires a mandatory reservation.

Take any train from Zermatt to Brig. However the connections towards Milano are not great. Usually you have to change trains at Visp (although you can take a through train Zermatt – Brig earlier and wait in Brig )

Take one of the Eurocity (EC) trains from Brig to Milano. They run 6 times per day, and leave Brig at 07.44 (too early for connx from Zermatt) ) 8.44, 9.44, 14.44, 15.44, 19.44.

    So for example, you can:

    depart Zermatt 12.37

    (change trains at Visp)

    arrive Brig 14.20

    depart Brig 14.44

    arrive Milano 16.37

Trains run twice per hour Zermatt – Visp, but trains do not run twice an hour to Milano. Only 6 through trains per day Brig – Milano (they are the EC trains from Geneve or Bern)

Would the train from Brig to Milano be covered by Swiss half fare card? Or would the Swiss travel pass be better. Thanks. Linda

    Hi Linda,

Validity of either ends at Domodossola. So you need a regular ticket from Domodossola to Milano:

Which pass is better depends on all your travels in Switzerland combined, not on this trip alone. Please find tips for selecting the best pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.

My family arrive in Zurich July 11 at 9:00 A.M. we want to leave asap to Grindelwald. All the trains I see leave around 3 pm in the afternoon. Any Idea how to get to grindelwald sooner? Help.

    Hello Linda

I’m not sure where you are looking but the SBB Timetable (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) will show you regular departures all day. See attached for departures and sample connections.
