Im Traveling to Grindenwald from Zurich Sept 14 for a 5 night stay.

Leave Zurich on the 19th and have to catch flight to italy at 11am

meaning i should be at airport by 930 am latest.

Is it possible to catch early enough train from Grindenwald to make that departure

or should I just rent a car and park it? I know there is no free parking but rail one

way is appx $80 per person and there are two of us. $160 x 2 ( round trip ) $320

Is there a better option for us? Im new to Switzerland and hope to get some advice from seasoned travelers. Thank you from Texas!

Hi Stewartlj from the Lone Star State! Welcome to MySwissAlps!

Generally you’re best off traveling by train. This may also apply to your transfer to Italy, unless perhaps you’re planning to travel beyond Rome: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy. No need to fly in Europe for short to mid range distances.

You can’t do much with a car in Grindelwald. Please see:

The prices you mentioned seem like the standard fare. There’s usually no need to pay that much. There are passes and cheaper (time limited) tickets. You need an itinerary including day trips to start looking into passes: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses.

    Does this get you started?

it does thank you so much. If im only going to use the train twice

from zurch to greindenwald and back what would the best option for fares be?

leaving Zurich around 1100 am on sept 14

leaving grindenwald around 6 am sept 24

a half fare pass probably doenst make sense and im a 100% newcomer here

    Many many thanks

    Hi Stewartjl,

For those transfers, you may look into Saver Day Passes. If bought well in advance, they can be cheaper than regular train tickets: http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass.

But as Arno mentioned, you should first create an itinerary and decide on the car versus train issue. I guess you’ll be using mountain transportation too while you’re in Grindelwald, and you couldn’t use a car for many trips anyway. So you’ll have to include such trips when deciding which rail pass is best for your overall itinerary ,even if you’d be using a car. This page may help you to get started: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.
