Rail travelling from Rome to Zurich
ManishGathan, a family of three, is planning a train trip from Rome to Zurich. They need advice on ticket reservations, direct train options, and hotel suggestions near Zurich station within a budget of 150 USD. They have clarified that they will use the Swiss Travel Pass for their journey.
- Reserve your train tickets in advance to avoid higher prices and ensure availability.
- You only need to buy tickets from Rome to Chiasso, as the Swiss Travel Pass covers the rest of your trip.
- There are no direct trains from Rome to Zurich; a change in Milan is necessary.
- Look for hotels near Zurich station that fit your budget on dedicated hotel sites.

We (family of three) are planning to take a train from Rome to Zurich. I will have Swiss Pass purchased online. Please advise,
1) Do I need to reserve seats for a train from Rome to Milan and Milan to Zurich in advance or I can go to Rome station, buy tickets and catch the train?
2) Is there any direct train from Rome to Zurich with no changing at Milan?
3) If I have Swiss Pass, will I get any discounts for Rome to Zurich or Milan to Zurich rail tickets?
4) Any suggestion for a hotel near Zurich station within a range of 150 USD for a family of three (my kid is 13 years)
