Refund for unused days on Swiss Travel Pass Flex

Short summary – read this first

Thad is wondering if he can get a refund for the unused days on his 15 Day Swiss Travel Pass Flex after using only 5 days. He plans to borrow a car from a friend for the rest of his trip and is looking for clarification on refund eligibility based on his current situation.

Key takeaways:
  • Refunds for unused days on the Swiss Travel Pass Flex are generally not given unless there are specific reasons like illness or an accident.
  • If you use 8 or more days of the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you won’t qualify for a refund.
  • Contact the company where you purchased the Swiss Travel Pass for accurate information about your situation.
  • Consider using your remaining travel days to explore more of Switzerland's public transport options.

    Hi,

I think I know the answer to this question, but just wanted to confirm.

I bought a 15 Day Swiss Travel Pass Flex. I’ve used 5 days so far, but may not need to use the remaining 10 days on the ticket.

Is it possible to get any sort of refund for the days I didn’t use?

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Thad,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! I’m sorry to hear you will be traveling less than planned. I checked the rules. Here’s what I found:

Partial non-use is accepted as proven in the following cases:

    • illness or accident, on presentation of the relevant documents
    • the refund request is made at the place where travel was interrupted
    • confirmation by the transport undertaking
    • the ticket is sent by post from the place where travel was interrupted to the issuing
      office
    • death

Additionally, if 8 or more days of a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex are used, there will be no refund in any case.

To be 100% sure, you should check with the company you purchased from once you know how many travel days you did not use, and share the reason with them.

    I hope this helps!

Hi, Arno. Thanks for your reply.

A friend bought the ticket for me directly from the SBB website about ten days ago. It’s an online ticket that was sent to my email and I activate the individual days on the “activateyourpass.com” website.

The five days I’ve used from the Swiss Pass have taken me around the country, but the friend I’m staying with now said he can loan me his car for the rest of my stay here.

The last train I took on Saturday brought me to the city I’m now staying in (is that what it means by “where my travel was interrupted”?).

So, do you think that would make me eligible for the refund or not?

I apologize if this is not as clear as it ought to be. I really do appreciate your help.

    Hi Thad,

I’m not really sure what it means.

Perhaps you should contact the reseller you bought the STP Flex from directly for clarification.

    Regards,

    Anna

    I see.

Is SBB a reseller? I thought it is the official site. It was bought directly from their website.

I guess I’ll contact them directly.

Thanks for trying to help, Arno and Anna.

It sounds as if the only reason you are stopping using the pass is that your friend can loan you his car.

That would be very far off from being a reasonable reason for claiming a refund, as it is entirely your choice to stop using the train.

    Hi Thad,

SBB is an official site, but not the only one. The domestic SBB webshop mainly caters to Swiss residents, although it also offers some of the main tourist products. We usually recommend the official SBB tourist webshop though, as that’s easier for travelers from abroad: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/en/product/swissFlexiPass. More purchase options are here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/price.

Based on your description I don’t think you qualify for a refund, but you should contact the SBB to be sure. If you still have travel days left for which you can’t get a refund, I advise you to just use them and enjoy Switzerland’s excellent public transport.

@1960man: Yes, I figured as much, but some travel companies give a refund regardless of the reason for not traveling. I didn’t think that would be the case in this case, but wanted to be sure.

@Annika: Yes. That’s what I intend to do if I can’t get the refund, at least it will give me the option to do some things that I’ve never tried before in Switzerland, like take a boat or something. Ha!

    Thanks so much, everyone.
