Rome to Zermatt by train or plane?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Canekife and his wife are planning a trip with their two young daughters from Rome to Zermatt in early January. They are wondering whether to take a train or a flight, and which specific train routes to take for the best scenery and convenience.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose trains over flights for a scenic experience; the Eurocity trains offer the fastest connections from Milan to Zermatt.
  • Consider obtaining a Swiss Travel Pass for your journey, as it can save you money on multiple trips within Switzerland.
  • Luggage shouldn't be a problem on trains, and second class might be more suitable for traveling with young children.

Hi Everyone, my wife and I and 2 young daughters are planning to travel to Zermatt from Rome early January 2020, what does everyone recommend, Rail or Air , we are favouring the train and would love the snow scenery in early January but it looks like it’s a whole day travel compared to flying from Rome to Zurich, then training it to Zermatt, The 2 questions are, Rail or Air and What’s the best train to catch ( Italian or Swiss ) and which exact train route, Thanks .

Hello Canekife ans Welcome to MySwissAlps,

I doubt there would be much difference in time in practice. I would pick trains anytime. Airports are a pain with all that checking in caper.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel. Look for the Eurocity trains for the fastest connections from Milan onwards. I am not too familar with Italian trains.

We will also have 4 large suitcases and carry on bags, I assume this will not be a problem on the train ??? Do u also recommend 1st class or 2 nd class, I’ve read somewhere that the 1st class isn’t worth the money on certain trains , thanks.

I doubt luggage would be a problem. Shouldn’t be on the Swiss trains, Italian ones I can’t say but they do move lots of tourists around and tourists have luggage. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/luggage.

I’ll look into the Swiss travel pass as we will be traveling Rome to Zermatt and then Zermatt to Zurich to fly to London, thanks.

Hi Caneknife. I agree with Rockoyster that the train is better than flying for such short distances. There’s not much difference time wise and it’s much more eco-friendly.

Please find information on the Swiss Travel Pass at myswissalps.com/swisst ravelpass.

    Hello Caneknife,

That’s a personal preference. Some find it worth paying more for more spacious seats and a (generally) more quiet environment. With young children I’d probably prefer second class. That’s more lively and less of a problem for them running around a bit.

    Hello Caneknife,

Trains are more convenient. You can take FrecciaRossa 1000 highspeed train from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale FR9668 (Dep:7:30 – Arr:10:29). Then you can take Eurocity 52 to Visp (Dep: 11:23 Arr 13.25), then you can take Regio339 Visp to Zermatt (Dep:13:41 Arr:14:51).

Last month, when i traveled, took from Rome to Luzern, I put luggage in the upper compartment above the seat in Treinitalia trains and In eurocity trains, Kept the luggage in luggage space near the entrance.
