Grindelwald 3 days + Zurich transfer – tickets or rail pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Patrick is planning a trip in August 2024, ending a Rhine River cruise in Zurich. He wants to take a train to Grindelwald on the same day, then explore the Jungfrau region, including a possible visit to Jungfraujoch, within a few days. He’s looking for the best travel options to make the most of his time.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the SBB timetable to plan your train journeys and consider stopping in Luzern for a brief visit.
  • Consider purchasing a Swiss Half Fare Card to save on travel costs, especially if you're visiting Jungfraujoch.
  • You could also look into the Jungfrau Travel Pass if you plan to use a lot of mountain transport, but keep in mind it requires a minimum of 3 days.

    Hi Patrick,

You can plan your journeys from one place to another using the SBB timetable:

    https://www.sbb.ch/en

Helpful information about how to use it is here:

    https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

Travelling from Zürich to Grindelwald, I would recommend you go via Luzern, so you can travel over the Brünig Pass and alongside several beautiful lakes on the Luzern-Interlaken Express.

If you have enough time, taking a 2-hour break in Luzern to walk across the Chapel Bridge and have a bit of a stroll in the Altstadt (Old Town), might be nice. The Chapel Bridge and Altstadt are close to the station and you can leave your luggage in the lockers at the station

You can go back to Zürich the same way a few days later, or go via Bern for a bit of different scenery.

With only 2 days in the Jungfrau Region, a Swiss Half Fare Card might be your best option for reducing travel costs within the Jungfrau Region, as well as reducing the cost of travel to and from Zürich. It becomes worthwhile when your total transport costs would otherwise be more than CHF 240. If you are visiting the Jungfraujoch, that will certainly be the case.

Here is some useful information about the Jungfrau Region:

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Patrick,

    Very welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your plans – some nice choices.

I agree with Alpenrose, it could be that the Swiss Half Fare Card would be a good option for your visit.  To be sure, it’s best you carry out some maths to see if it’s worth investing in the Swiss Half Fare Card.  There is a downloadable spreadsheet in the attached link which will thereon display the best pass options, based on your daily plans.

    Here it is:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/compare/

There is also the Jungfrau Travel Pass which could be an option – though there is a minimum of 3 days.  Depending if you think you will be using a lot of mountain transport, it could be worth investing in, even if you feel you may not use the pass so much on your arrival and departure days?  Here’s our guide to the Jungfrau Travel Pass:

I hope this gets you started, do reach out if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
