Wanted to share that whilst preparing for Swiss trips in May and September 2026 I noticed that the cable car to the Santis peak was not operating due to construction (closed from 1 May 2026 to late fall–possibly November).  Bummers as I aim to explore this region more and was planning on a visit both months with friends.  Glad I checked.  Now working on alternate plan B! 🙂

    Hello Laura

I would not cancel a proposed trip to North-East Switzerland just because the Santis Cable car will be closed for renovation.

There are a lot of other attractions in North-East Switzerland.  In particular there are three other cable cars in Appenzell canton.  Brulisau to Hoher Kasten; Jakobsbad to Kronberg; Wasseraun to Ebenalp.  I know from personal experience that all three give fantastic views.  If you stay three or more nights in Appenzell, the Guest Card will give you one return free ride on each of these cable cars.

    Kind regards
    Roger

Hi, Roger.  Believe me, I’m not cancelling anything. 🙂  After a couple of visits to this area I’d finally decided to include Santis on these trips.  Wrong year for me!  The Hoher Kasten is indeed beautiful and my preferred trip to the Chaeserugg is still on for September.  Will simply hike the valleys in May.
