Seat reservations EuroCity train Zurich-Milan

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning to travel from Zurich to Milan on September 5, using the EuroCity 313 train. They have a Swiss Travel Pass and need clarification on seat reservations for the Swiss and Italian portions of their trip. They are also verifying the coverage of their 8-day Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • For the segment from Chiasso to Milan, you must make a mandatory seat reservation.
  • You do not need to reserve seats for the Zurich to Chiasso journey; you can sit anywhere in 2nd class with your Swiss Travel Pass.
  • If your 8-day Swiss Travel Pass starts on August 29, it will cover travel until 5 a.m. on September 6.

Hello! My husband and I are ready to book train tickets from Zurich to Milan on the EuroCity 313. We will have the Swiss Travel Pass and understand that we only need to purchase a ticket from Chiasso to Milan on the Italian train website. The SBB app for this train shows the symbol for both Mandatory place reservation and Place reservation possible. What is the difference between these two symbols?

We will be reserving our seats on the Chiasso to Milan portion, but I am confused as to whether we need to reserve seats on the Zurich to Chiasso portion. Since we’re using the STP and don’t need to purchase a ticket, do we still just board the train, sit anywhere in 2nd class and show our pass if asked to and then move to our assigned seats at Chiasso? We will be traveling on September 5 and want to depart Zurich HB at 07:33.

Thanks. This forum has been very helpful in planning our upcoming trip.

    Hi BALucas,

Seat reservation for the Italian section of your journey is obligatory and usually included in the ticket when you purchase it. For the Swiss portion of the journey, seat reservation is not compulsory but possible.

With a Swiss Travel Pass, you only need a ticket from Chiasso to Milan. Purchase option are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy, or you can buy the ticket directly from any SBB train station.

You can find more information on seat reservation on Swiss trains here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations

    Anna,

Thank you for your reply. We will make our mandatory seat reservations for the Italian portion and just sit anywhere on the Swiss portion, but move to our reserved seats upon arriving in Chiasso.

If I may ask another question concerning the Swiss Travel Pass travel dates, we will be purchasing an 8 day pass with travel beginning on August 29. I am counting August 29 as day one and September 5 would be day eight with travel until sometime early (1 a.m.?) on September 6. Is that correct? I want to be sure September 5 is covered for our last day in the country.

    Thanks.

    Beth

    Hi Beth,

That’s correct. If your 8-day Swiss Travel Pass is activated on the 29th August, you can use it until 5am on 6th September.
