Seating procedure when dining in Swiss restaurants

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jaye is puzzled about why restaurants often seat customers outside even when they request an indoor table. They wonder if they must wait to be seated, looking for clarification on dining practices in Switzerland, especially during warmer seasons.

Key takeaways:
  • It's common for restaurants to prefer customers to wait to be seated to manage reservations effectively.
  • During warmer months, many restaurants favor outdoor seating, but most will accommodate requests for indoor tables.
  • Some restaurants might keep indoor areas closed to simplify organization, so it's best to communicate your preference at the door.

    Hello Jaye,

Many restaurants do have a policy whereby they prefer customers to wait / be greeted before being seated. This is likely so they are aware if you have made a reservation, you can then be allocated to your table. If with no reservation, in the likelihood they are fully booked, you could be turned away. In addition, they can be aware who has arrived rather than customers arriving and sitting wherever they like – you could be missed and then risk not be served.

During the warmer months here, generally al fresco dining is preferred, hence you are guided to a table outside. If preference is indoors, this is generally catered for too. Though there could be exceptions whereby a restaurant would prefer the indoor area to remain ‘closed’ whilst customers are outdoors only – purely for organisational reasons.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
