Shops & railways open on Swiss national holiday?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is inquiring about the availability of cable cars, railways, and shops in Lucerne and Zurich on August 1st. They want to know what to expect on this national holiday regarding transport and shopping options. It’s important to plan as many visitors will be out enjoying the day.

Key takeaways:
  • Most shops will be closed on August 1st, but those at train stations and airports will remain open.
  • Cable cars and trains will operate with holiday schedules, so check for reduced local train services.
  • Make plans to catch the fireworks displays that evening, as they are a highlight of the holiday.

You asked a good question. Hopefully the forum members in Switzerland will respond. I just did a google search and the first two places came up with the following:

    1) From tripAdviser by a Swiss:

ALL shops will be closed with the exception of those in the train stations and at the airport. In Luzernas well. Everywhere in fact except in the resort villages where they can open on a limited basis.

Trains run on normal schedules… only some really commuter trains won’t be running that day.

    2) From Swiss Vistas (also on the web):

August 1st is a national holiday in Switzerland, and most shops (except in touristy areas), post offices and banks are closed.

Most shops will be closed. Cable cars will run because they are for tourism and people do touristy things on public holidays. Trains run on every day of the year in Switzerland. The service will be the ‘Sundays and Holidays’ service which means some local trains aimed mainly at commuters don’t run.

I would just like to double check: what does “+ Sundays and public holidays (Aug 1) mean” under the legend for the Cogwheel train Vitznau – Rigi Kulm timetable and the Weggis – Rigi Kaltbad / Kräbel – Rigi Scheidegg aerial cable car?

    http://www.pilatus.ch/fileadm in/files/informieren/f ahrplan/Pilatus_Bahnen _Fahrplan_2019.pdf

for the timings such as those at 08:50, 09:35 etc that do not have letters A to G beside them, does it imply that the cogwheel railway (Alpnachstadt to Pilatus) will run at those timings during 1 August?

Will the KRIENS–FRÄKMÜNTEGG–PILATUS KULM–FRÄKMÜNTEGG–KRIENS aerial cable run on 1 August as well? What is the frequency of the cable cars as nothing was mentioned on the website

    Hi cc123,

The cross icon means that that service only operates on Sundays and the mentioned holidays. If there’s no icon for a service then it should operate every day. A lot of transportation will be fully operational on August 1 because Swiss residents will be making day trips too.

It might be easier to use the timetable that 1960man mentioned. That’s one timetable for all of Switzerland. You only need designated timetables for one place if that overall timetable does not work somehow. Do read the instructions before using it, that prevents confusion.
