Short boat trips from Locarno

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a day trip to Locarno this week and wants advice on lake cruise options. They recently enjoyed a trip to Lugano and are looking for places to visit, avoid, and any tips for their short visit. They think some boats may be covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:

Short boat trips to Tenero or Ascona are great options and are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Check the STP validity map for details on boat services in Locarno. If dining, Ristorante Sensi has a lovely terrace with great views and food.

My wife and I have a free day this week and are interested in going to Locarno. We’d like to do a lake cruise, but I can’t find much on options in the short time we have available. Any tips from anyone that has been there and done that recently? Places to include, places to avoid. I presume that at least some of the boats are covered under the STP. Any other tips for a one day visit? We went to Lugano two days ago and that was a delightful short trip – details to follow in my trip report once we get back home.

Because not much of Lago Maggiore is in Switzerland the lake boat service at Locarno is limited to a small area but as can be seen on the STP validity map . Here is the brochure:

    Hi CabinJon,

If you’re interested in short boat trips from Locarno, you can take the boat to Tenero then take the train back. Alternatively, take a boat to Ascona and walk back. These short boat rides are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. You can find more suggestions here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakemaggiore

    Regards,

    Anna

We stayed in Locarno at the Hotel Garni Muralto for 2 nights last month. We visited the Madonna del Sasso church and monastery in Orselina and took a boat trip on Lake Maggiore to the Isola Grande in the Brissago Islands to visit the spectacular botanical garden. On the return trip we got off the boat at Ascona and enjoyed a walk around the picturesque town and the interesting heart art exhibition next to the lake. This excursion was not covered with the STP but well worth the cost. That day was perhaps one of the most relaxed and picture perfect days of our whole trip! I am still envisioning the breathtaking scenery in the 3 places we stayed – Montreux, Wengen and Locarno.

Well, we’re back from Locarno. Ended up not taking a boat ride but walked around town & the waterfront for a few hours. Piazza Grande was a bit of a disappointment but we did have a nice cappuccino at the far end of it. Walked back to the waterfront looking for a place to get lunch. Most of the places along the piazza didn’t catch our interest but the Ristorante Sensi one block below the train station and across the street from the waterfront sure did. Lovely terrace shaded by big trees, view of the lake, and great food. May catch a boat next time but we have a “Go to” lunch spot now. Small serving pasta dishes were wonderful.
