Easy ski options near Grindelwald?

Short summary – read this first

Siew is planning a trip to Grindelwald from 15 December for three nights with her family. They want to visit Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn while fitting in some skiing for her son, who is a beginner. Siew needs advice on ski rentals and suitable ski areas for easy runs that can fit into their itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider skiing at Kleine Scheidegg, which has beginner options and is easily accessible from Jungfraujoch.
  • You can rent ski equipment at Kleine Scheidegg instead of returning to Grindelwald, which is convenient.
  • The ski season starts early December, so you should find decent snow conditions for skiing activities.

    Hi,

We will be staying in Grindelwald from 15 Dec for 3 nights. We want to visit Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn. My 18th year old son would like to ski. He only has one ski experience in South Korea and he can only do blue /easy runs. Is there any recommendations on where he can ski so that we can fit it into our trips to Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.

We are from the sunny island of Singapore and it’s our first trip to Switzerland. We need help to figure out how to squeeze in a ski activity for him.

    Thanks!

    Siew

Hi Siew and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Each ski region has beginner ski options. He could ski at Kleine Scheidegg while you continue on to Jungfraujoch. You can read more about the ski area here: http://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/jungfrau-ski-region/

You are just at the beginning of the ski season but shouldn’t have any problems with snow at those elevations.

Thanks for your reply. We are hoping to spend the mornings in Jungfraujoch or Shilthorn and have him do the ski in the afternoons. Will this work?

Will there be ski rental shops at the ski areas or do we have to go back down to Zermatt to get the rental? Any idea which ski area offers more blue runs? I understand that we will not be able to ski at Grindelwald First since it will only be operative from 22 Dec? Is this right? We are doing the First walk on 15 Dec when we arrive at Grindelwald.

Sorry for the many questions. Cracking on my head on planning this:)

    Thanks,

    Siew

Sure that could work – whatever works best for your schedule. You’ll want to arrange the rentals when you arrive in Grindelwald and see what options there are for 1/2 days.

No need to rent anything in Zermatt if you are skiing in Grindelwald no. It is a huge ski destination and you won’t have problems finding rental shops. 🙂

First is scheduled to open for skiing on Dec.22 yes but good snow conditions may have it open earlier.

Here is a good web page I found outlining details on ski resorts in the region: http://www.skiresort.info/ski -holiday-in/grindelwald-107/ski-resorts/

My apologies. I meant Grindelwald and not Zermatt. Are we able to rent the ski at the ski areas of KL Schneidegg/Mannlichen on the way down from Jungfraujoch instead of renting it at Grindelwald and carry up the mountains?

    Thanks.

    Hi Siew,

Yes, you can rent equipment at Kleine Scheidegg: http://www.wyss-sport.ch/en/wyss-sport.html.
