Skiing in Switzerland in August or September

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Darrell is looking for skiing options in Switzerland during August or September. They want to know if it's feasible to ski during these months and where to go. It's noted that Zermatt and Saas-Fee are the only areas suitable for skiing during this time.

Key takeaways:
  • Zermatt and Saas-Fee are the only locations in Switzerland where you can ski in August and September, but only for experienced skiers due to variable snow conditions.
  • Check the latest snow conditions on websites like mmerski and using apps like iSki Swiss for real-time updates.
  • Ski lifts in Saas-Fee may not operate in the afternoon, so it’s best to ski in the morning.
  • The Glacier at Mittelallalin is a popular spot for skiing in mid-September.

    Hi Darrell,

I’m not a skier, but I understand there are only two areas in Switzerland that offer skiing in August and September: Zermatt and Saas-Fee. I saw people skiing on the glacier at Mittelallalin above Saas-Fee in mid-September last year.

You can check what’s open on the following websites:

    http://www.saas-fee.ch/en/skifahren/so mmerski/

    http://www.zermatt.ch/en/Snow -report#slopes

There are also some apps that provide information:

    iSki Swiss

    play.google.com/store/ apps/details?id=intermaps.iskiswiss &hl=en

I have noticed others say that skiing at this time of year is only for experienced skiers.

    Hi Darrell,

For experienced skiers it will be possible at the locations that Alpenrose mentioned. It’s not easy as the snow conditions are not as good as in winter, and the air is thin because of the altitude. The mornings are the best time. I think the ski lifts in Saas-Fee are not even operating in the afternoon. The lifts for hikers and sightseers are open all day though.
