Is Saas-Fee a good place to see spring flowers in late June?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland in late June to see spring flowers and meadows. They are considering Saas Fee but are unsure if it's suitable for walking at that time of year. They are looking for advice on whether Saas Fee is a good destination or if there are better options for enjoying the floral scenery.

Key takeaways:
  • Saas Fee offers great hiking options, but late June may still have snow at higher elevations; look for flowers below the tree line.
  • Consider exploring the Bernese Oberland region for more reliable flower sightings.
  • Check for local trails like the Almagelleralp, but confirm with the tourist office about accessibility in late June.

Hi.  Want to visit Switzerland again in late June to see spring flowers and meadows.  Did this a couple of years ago and based ourselves in Lauterbrunnen and Gersau for Rigi. This time, thinking of going to Saas Fee for this reason but am not sure if this is a good place to go for walks for this purpose?  If not, are there perhaps better places to visit to see the flowers/meadows?  Many thanks

    Hi Moonbeam,

You can find our handy guide to Saas Fee here: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/saas-fee/

Like most mountain destinations in the Swiss Alps, Saas Fee is great for walks and hikes in the summer between July and September. In June, there could still be snow on the summit.  You have more chance of seeing wild flowers and meadows below the tree line. My personal suggestion would be to research the various sub-regions in the Bernese Oberland  (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/bernese-oberland/) and pick one as your base.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Moonbeam,

I am unsure what level walking / hiking you enjoy but there is an alpine flower trail in the Saas Fee area, called Almagelleralp.  You may even see Switzerland’s national flower, the Edelweiss.  Given the time of year, as mentioned by Anna, it could be too cold for the flowers to be out.  You may want to check in with the local tourist office to see if the trail is open for walking too.

If you navigate to “Other websites of interest”, use the link there to search for this trail.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
