St. Beatus Caves and Niederhorn by bus/boat in July

Short summary – read this first

Patrick is planning a visit to Lake Thun this July and is looking for advice on how to get to St. Beatus Caves and then to Beatenbucht for a boat trip. He wants to know about bus connections and any potential discounts, especially regarding the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Take Bus 21 from Interlaken West directly to St. Beatus Caves; it departs every half hour.
  • After exploring the caves, use the same bus to get to Beatenbucht, where the boat to Interlaken is conveniently located.
  • Check the last boat departure time to ensure you have enough time to return; it leaves at 17:02 PM.
  • Hotel passes can offer discounts, but the Swiss Travel Pass may not apply.

I am asking as I have a Saturday in July this year I am considering this and cruise Lake Thum.  It is on the info site in upper right corner but it is very old info 09 July 2019.  Because the boats start so late or appear to go here last – I probably need to take the bus from Interlaken West to the caves first as it stops directly in front of entrance.  Then (if anyone has actually done this?) how do we get to the port / or is there a bus to catch to get to Beatenbucht to access the Tram up the mountain.  There also appears to be a bus that goes to Beatenburg – Niederholm to catch the 2nd tram upon leaving St.. Beatus Caves

We can to to Beatenburg first or the later if we learn and can get some morning times 9 – 10 AM beginning.  Also read where there are discounts with hotel passes giiven out, where the Swiss Travel Pass will not work for a discount.   Any help would be appreciated.   FYI it is either this or go by train,  boat, and bus to Engstligen Falls. (#2 or 3 falls) but this is at least a 4-5 hour tour minimum for one thing.

Thank you and info from travelers is welcome.  Patrick

    Hi DelrayDancer,

Based on your plans, I suggest the following:

    • In the morning, take Bus 21 from Interlaken West to Sundlaunen, Beatushohlen (the bus stop is located right at the entrance to St Beatus Caves). Bus departs every half hour.
    • After your visit to the caves, return to the same bus stop and take bus 21 to Beatenbucht, about 12 mins journey. The bus stops right in front of the boat landing stage. You can either take the boat back to Interlaken from here. If you have time, you can make an excursion to Niederhorn before the boat cruise. Simply follow the direction to the Beatenbucht funicular that will take you to Beatenberg, where you will then switch to a cable car that will transport you to the top of the mountain. Take note, the last boat to Interlaken departs at 17.02 PM so make sure you allocate enough time to return and catch you boat connection.
