St. Moritz, Poschiavo or Samedan?

Short summary – read this first

Yenhan10 is gearing up for a trip to Switzerland in early September and is seeking advice on their itinerary for Sunday, September 10. They plan to take the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano, have lunch in Poschiavo, and are unsure whether to rush to St. Moritz or enjoy more time in Poschiavo before continuing their journey. They also wonder if Samedan has anything interesting to check out.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider spending more time in Poschiavo as it's a small town that can be explored quickly.
  • You can take a regular train from Poschiavo to St. Moritz for a half-day trip if you're short on time.
  • If you're interested in views, the Punt Muragl funicular from Samedan offers great panoramas and unique sculptures on the surrounding art trail.
  • Look into train schedules to optimize your journey back to Chur for dinner before your flight.

Hiall, I am doing final homework before travelling to Switzerland early September.

I need a second opinions about our trip on Sunday (10 Sept), we will take Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano in the morning, and plan to hop on the next normal train to Poschiavo to have a lunch.

Here’s the dilemma for me, I am not sure should I catch the train to St. Moritz just after our lunch (the time is kind of rush), and have a short stroll around the St. Moritz, or should I stay at Poschiavo for a little bit longer to check around and take the bus afterwards to Landquart via Samedan.

Either way I plan to stop at Chur for a dinner before going back to Zurich at night.

Seems Landquart has nothing special, does Samedan has anything to offer?

Which ways do you guys think is more enjoyable? Thanks!

    Hi Yenhan10,

Poschiavo is probably the biggest town in the Poschiavo Valley. It makes a great base if you plan to explore the region over a few days. But the town itself is pretty small and won’t take you long to explore on foot. So you could potentially combine a day trip to Poschiavo and St Moritz in half a day. There are regular train services between Poschiavo and St Moritz (about 1.5 hour journey). St Moritz is a bigger town and a little more touristy.: http://www.myswissalps.com/stmoritz. There are several direct trains from St Moritz to Chur daily. You can use the timetable to check train schedules and plan your journey: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

    Regards,

Thanks Anna, too bad we only have one day to do all of these activities and we need to fly back to our country the next day.

    Hello Yenhan10,

If you wanted to stop in Samedan. You could take the Punt Muragl funicular to Muottas Muragl. On a clear day, you can enjoy some amazing panoramic views at the hotel located at the top. This funicular was actually the first one to be built in the area.

If time allows, there is an “Art” trail just above the hotel, here you can enjoy some unique sculptures by five Swiss artists.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
