St Moritz to Livigno with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A family of four, including two kids aged 10 and 13, plans to travel from St Moritz to Livigno. They already purchased the Swiss Travel Pass and want to confirm its validity for the train from St Moritz to Zernez and the bus from Zernez to Livigno. They also seek guidance on boarding procedures and seating arrangements.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers both the train from St Moritz to Zernez and the bus to Livigno, so you can just board the transport by showing your pass.
  • You do not need to reserve seats for most trains and buses in Switzerland, just find a seat in your class.
  • When traveling on a post bus, it's polite to show your ticket to the driver even if not requested.

    Hi,

We are a family of 4, (2 adults and 2 child 10yrs and 13yrs). We plan to travel from St Moritz to Livigno. If we already purchase the Swiss Travel Pass(STP), (2 adults and Family Travel Card to cover 6-16yrs old), do the pass cover Rail from St Moritz to Zernez and Bus from Zernez to Livigno. According to the STP map, these are marked red and yellow solid lines so they are covered but I just want to be sure. Also do we just board to train at St Moritz with STP or do we need to book seats at SBB website?

    Thanks for your advice.

Hi Esmond75 and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

In general, the Swiss Travel Pass is only valid in Switzerland, but there are some exceptions, Livigno is one of them: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, you just board the train, there is no need to book seats. Actually, you do not need seat reservations for 99% of all trains and buses in Switzerland. Exceptions are some international trains and some panoramic trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. Learn more here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations/howtouse.

    Dear Ildiko

    Thank you for your reply.

According to area of validity map, it seems St Moritz to Zernez (by rail) and Zernez to Livigno (by bus) are covered by Swiss Travel Pass (red line and yellow line respectively)!

I checked the SBB website, that both rail and bus sectors dont require seat reservations. Does that mean we present out Swiss Travel Pass at St Moritz train station and Zernez bus station to board respective rail and bus? How do we know which carriage we should sit in?…free seating for whole train? For the bus, how do we know if there are sufficient seats on the bus during that departure time?

    Rgds,

    Esmond

Swiss public transport works on the ‘honesty’ system. As long as you have a valid permit to travel of any kind (ie STP or ordinary ticket you can board any regular train and any regular bus. The Zernez – Livigno post bus is a regular local Swiss post bus service so you can just get on. On most post buses, even if the driver doesn’t actually request it, it is polite to show the driver your ticket.

Zernez is a small station so you will find the bus waiting almost adjacent to the train

By the way what are your travel dates? Because there is also a direct bus St Moritz – Bernina – Livigno, but only in summer.

    Hi Esmond,

this might be useful for you, it explains to you the train travel in general in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/howtotravel.
You seat where you see free places, the only thing you need to be careful about is the class. If you have a 2nd class ticket or rail pass, do not sit in a 1st class carriage. The 1st and 2nd class are very well shown outside and also inside the carriages, so no worries. 🙂

    Dear 1960man and Ildiko

    Thank you for your reply.

We are thinking of visiting multiple places in Europe in a family of 4 later part of this year (winter)…therefore the much earlier headstart planning. If it doesn’t work we may change itinerary to visit some place else.

For part of the journey, we are considering the glacier express from Zermatt to St Moritz…then from St Moritz to Livigno for some ski days….and after that onwards to Milano.

The journey St Moritz to Livigno and Livigno to Milano is particularly challenging as there are no trains into Livigno. Summer bus route through Bernina closes during winter months.

It seems for St Moritz to Livigno, the only option is to St Moritz-Zernez by rail (SBB) and Zernez-Livigno by bus (Silvestri).

For Livigno to Milano, we have to go by Livigno to Bormio to Tirano by bus (Perego) and Tirano to Milano (Centrale) by rail (Trenitalia). Alternatively Livigno to Malpensa airport by Livigno express bus which is more costly.

While I understand this is a Swissalps forum, can anyone help point out where I can find the pricing for bus Perego for “Livigno to Bormio to Tirano by bus (Perego)”?

    Rgds

    Esmond.
