Do I need to buy a Stanserhorn ticket if I have a Swiss Travel Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Michelle is planning her first trip from Lucerne to Stanserhorn and has a Swiss Travel Pass. She wants to know if she needs a separate ticket to reach the top and whether it can be purchased at the station, as she is concerned about missing an online reservation time if she is late.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Travel Pass allows free travel on the funicular and cable car to Stanserhorn, but you must purchase a separate boarding pass for CHF 2.
  • You can reserve your slot online, or purchase it at the station, but ensure you have enough time to make your reservation after arriving at Stans.
➤ Buy your Swiss rail passes from the official SBB tourist webshop: instant mobile ticket, easy online cancellation.

Hi, My first excursion from Lucerne will be to Stanserhorn. I will have a Swiss travel pass. Do I need to have a ticket to get up to top. If so, can I purchase at the station? I read if you purchase one online there is a reservation time and I’m nervous about missing it if im late.

    Hi Michelle A,

The Swiss Travel Pass includes free travel on the funicular and cable car to Stanserhorn. However you will need to purchase a separate boarding pass to reserve your slot (cost CHF2). You can detail explanation on our Stanserhorn page: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/stanserhorn/

    Regards,

    Hello Michelle

Further to Anna’s reply, you can reserve your ‘slot’ on line.  And the slot only costs two francs!

It takes about five minutes to walk from Stans railway station to the bottom station of the funicular.  Suppose you have a slot at 09 30. From Lucerne, catch the 08 57 S4 stopping train going to Stans, arriving there at 09 18.  Twelve minutes is plenty of time to get to the funicular.  If you delayed your departure until the 09 10 RE train to Engelberg, that train gets to Stans at 09 24.   You may well miss your ‘slot’.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi Roger,
“And the slot only costs two francs!”
Doesn’t seem worth the cost of administering but I suppose it’s just enough to stop people booking a slot (or multiple slots) and then not using it (or only one of them).
